Europe weather: Spain, Italy and Greece to swelter in 40C heat as long-lasting heatwave grips continent | Climate News | Sky News

That is ridiculous.

Hot weather is ok, but there's hot and there's hot.

Anyone not looking forward to this heat on their European holiday

And yes - it's the locals, the vulnerable and others who live there who are going to suffer badly in this heat As well as all the wild fires

The baking temperatures raise concerns for health and wildfire threats, and for tourists packing for their summer holidays.

I'm a bit worried about this too. Unfortunately we're off to an area where there were extensive wildfires last year. It's just too hot but after this year we won't need to go on holiday in the school holidays again thank goodness. I much prefer 25 degrees so will holiday in May/June and Sept/Oct and it should be a lot cheaper too. Or will just holiday in the Uk a bit more.

Us too.

We are luckily able to rebook ours owing to some generous cancellation policies - so we are looking at different parts of Europe.

Where I am it was 40° today. It is a very dry heat though, so doesn't feel as uncomfortable as when it's humid.

Having said that, all I do in this weather is go to my air-conditioned work and then back to my air-conditioned home. Being outside is like standing too close to a roaring fire.

P.s it's 11.30pm and it's 31°.

smalbert · 11/07/2023 22:35

Was 44 degrees here earlier today but by pool and sea totally fine

Return2thebasic · 11/07/2023 23:12

What's worrying is that how things would be in 5 - 10 years time...

Phos · 12/07/2023 09:43

I'm going to Turkiye this weekend. It's going to be 45. I'm ok with hot weather though. Do hope they don't struggle with fires, they did last year I think.

Bringonthepitchforks · 12/07/2023 09:45

I think in the coming years we are going to see a mass migration of people into Scandinavia and Scotland where the temperatures although hot won't be so searingly hot.

twilighteaser · 12/07/2023 13:11

I live in North Italy, where it's always very humid. Yesterday was 37 and felt like 39 with the high humidity. Trying to work in it at home, desk job, no aircon, it's hard but I'm used to it, especially after the last two summers where we had nearly 6 months of high 30s. My house was 33.5 at midnight though, so sleeping was hard. Dryer heat is easier, I've been in 44° and it didn't feel as hot as here.

Tighginn · 12/07/2023 13:26

If your worried just move to the West coast Scotland. Pishing it down and blowing a gale 50 weeks of the year!

Hellokittymania · 13/07/2023 13:11

I live on the mainland in Central Greece, it is supposed to get to 44 this weekend, I think today it will reach around 40 or just above, it is very very hot, I don’t have air-conditioning in my fifth floor apartment, and believe me, it is hot. In the middle of the night, it’s around 32, 33, so very hard to sleep.

please take precautions if you go on vacation, I understand that some people like “heat“ but as the OP said, there’s a big difference between some heat, and extreme heat, and extreme heat can cause people to get sick. Drink lots of water, stay in the shade, and follow guidelines interest areas. I believe at the Acropolis they are handing out water during the hottest times during the day and there are sunshades.

We need to get to net zero as fast as possible.

cakeorwine · 14/07/2023 19:27

The Acropolis was shut over lunch.

It is worrying how we seem to be seeing more heatwaves. Will this become our new normal from now on?

Cake or wine, yes, I am on the mainland in Central Grace and it is very very hot. Even the person who came today to repair my shutter almost couldn’t Perez, he got the shutter open very quickly so Eric could circulate, even hot air…

i’m seeing comments from British people who say they would like the heat wave to go to the UK… Not sure why, be careful what you wish for. A friend of mine is on holiday, and one of the nearby islands, but they live in Greece and they told me a group of British tourists was complaining it was too hot and they wouldn’t go back. It is supposed to dip down in temperature for a few days, at least here, and then go back up again at the end of next week. Thankfully, somebody will come on Friday to f install my air-conditioning unit. I bought my property in March, is it is a top floor penthouse full of floor to ceiling windows, so in the summer it’s going to be a greenhouse, and in the winter… Well, it was already very cold in March when I first moved in so I think January and February, especially if it snows like it did earlier this year, it will be very cold. Unit I bought can do both cool and heat

Bringonthepitchforks · 14/07/2023 21:03

I'm quite happy with how our summer is going at the moment. I really feel for anyone in southern Europe right now.

reddingweddy · 14/07/2023 21:08

It's 13 degrees and pissing it down where I am. I'm grateful the lochs are filling up, and a little bit of warmth would be very welcome... but 40+ degree heat is not normal for most of Europe.

No this will not become our new normal because it is going to continue to get hotter.
I am so fed up with no-one facing the truth. I don't mean us individuals. I mean politicians have known for years and years and they are all too scared to do the hard things and tell the hard truths.

I dont think they’re scared. I think they’ve been brainwashed by money from oil and gas companies telling them it’s fine, technology will sort it.
