DN is turning 9 soon and she likes being creative - drawing, painting , crafts etc. Budget £20 ish.

I've spent a long time in Amazon, but nothing has really inspired me, and I don't want to get her anything too babyish or naff.

There's a couple of Djeco items like foil and glitter art, that looks good but I haven't seen any "real" users photos of the finished product. I'm also contemplating Posca pens, but it doesn't seem enough on its own.

Anyone have any ideas please on what's jot and what's not for 9 year old girls?

TIA

felt needle kits or cross stitch? Our local market haberdashery has lots of starter kits which is good for that age as just need some concentration rather than lots of base skill

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.

That's it, she needs something that she can get absorbed in. I shall see whether there are some suitable for her.

diamond painting is fun if she enjoys fiddly stuff (it is little crystals you stick on to make a picture) and the results are quite nice, especially animal/bird pictures.

Mine both enjoyed decoupatch - you can get load of different animals, decorations, little boxes etc to decorate.

My DD also loved Mostaix. The harder/larger ones say 10 years and up - but if she is a crafty girl she will manage I am sure.

'decopatch' that should say -there is no 'u' in it !

Latch hook rug kit? Or those doll house miniatures kits, they look like teeny tiny real houses, they're around £20 but I don't know how fiddley they are.
Maybe scrapbooking? Get some nice paper and washi tapes and some photos of her from freeprints to make a memory book.
Shein has some cheap silicone molds to make candles/plaster of Paris and even jewellery molds to make with resin.

Does she enjoy drawing? Watercolour pencils are fun, and you can combine them with other media like wax crayons or ink for different effects.

A weaving loom? Amazon has nice ones for about your budget. She'd need some balls of yarn too but poundstretchers is good for those.

My 9 year old dd liked these, they're canvases that you colour and hang on the wall, when I bought them in April there we more designs in the store too such as a wolf, a butterfly and an intricate flower design.
I bought her some good quality colouring pens and she really enjoyed completing them in colours to match her bedroom and then added a bit of glitter and a few gems.

Dd got a small wooden easel and some cheap canvases from her gran. She loves it and has spent so much time painting since then

I got her some Acrylic paints on Amazon for a fiver too.

Also worth a browse on Etsy - you can often find some lovely craft sets that are a bit more unusual.

I loved cross stitch at that age. Or quilling which is pretty easy but looks great when done.

Some wonderful ideas and links, thanks so much.

Yes, she enjoys painting and drawing, so watercolour pencils are a good idea.

I've heard of diamond painting too, and they look good. Is there a reliable brand for this sort of thing? I know there are tons on Amazon, but a lot of the brand names either look made up of random letters, and I am a bit suspicious that they are just the same product from China. It's trying to sort the wheat from the chaff!

Off to have a browse!

My 9 year old liked sequin art, a bit like diamond painting but using sequins and pins. She is also a big fan of making all kinds of bracelets, beaded ones and woven friendship type. Also making hair clips out of glitter fabric, bath bombs, quilling.

Teatrayderby · 23/11/2023 19:46

Cross stitch, engraving art (a move up from scratch art), block printing, vaneer art, 'creart' do good paint by numbers by age.

BreakfastClub80 · 23/11/2023 20:15

If you are happy without a kit, my DD enjoyed trying out paint and pour at that sort of age. There may be sets about now too. It was quite messy though so maybe a summer activity!
