Very mild chicken pox = likely to get it again? Any experiences of this?

My son got chicken pox aged two and still breastfeeding a billion times a day.
He got 4-5 spots on his back only one of which (the mothership) properly blistered and scabbed over. Zero symptoms of illness. If it wasn't for all the kids at the childminder coming down with it at the same time, I never would have believed he got it.

he's now 4 and they are dropping like flies at the childminders again and I figured the poor bugger had a chance of getting it again.

I just wondered if any had a similar experience of this occurring to them?

Yep that's exactly what happend here to my DS and his friend. Both had it very mildly is less than 20 spots total and then they were both completely covered in them upon catching it a second time.

Sorry it's probably not what you want to hear but it's way more common than people think and the amount of people who didn't believe you could catch it more than once blew my mind.

pippinsleftleg · 11/07/2023 17:24

Yes it happened to my DD

BiggerBoat1 · 11/07/2023 17:25

That's what happened for my DD. I was thrilled she had such a mild case and then she got it really badly about six months later. Sorry - not the news you wanted probably.

The only experience I can offer is my own: I had it very mildly at 4 (fewer than ten spots) then again, much more nastily, at 15 when my younger brother gave it to me. I was not impressed,

DancingBarefootTonight · 11/07/2023 17:27

We think out son had it very mildly when he was 2. He only had about 6 spots but they were blisters that scabbed so a GP said it was very likely to be chicken pox but mild.

He was the around his cousins when they had it after that and didn’t get it and again around kids at nursery when it did the rounds and he didn’t get it, so we thought he’d just got it mildly before and that would be it.

Then when he was in reception aged 5, he got it when about a third of the class did. More spots than the first time, definitely chicken pox, but still not too bad compared to others.

It’s just a case of waiting and seeing if he gets it.

Precipice · 11/07/2023 17:28

It's always a possibility, even if he had a more serious case.

I had in early childhood a mild case of chickenpox. From what I've been told, anyway, too early to remember. Not many spots, so that the diagnosis even from the GP was "likely chickenpox".

When I was in my teens, my sister got chickenpox, youngest sister got it from her, but I got nothing. So it's possible he might avoid it again. However, the youngest sister had chickenpox only that one time, and later, still at primary school, she got shingles instead.

DancingLedgend · 11/07/2023 17:30

My second born had 2 spots.

Never had it again.(Even when younger sibling caught it a couple of years later).
So it's by no means inevitable.

yumscrumfatbum · 11/07/2023 17:31

My son had it at 4 weeks old, I was breastfeeding. He had a mild case. I subsequently had two more children both of whom had a proper case of it twice each, over about 6 years. DS is now 22 and hasn't had it again despite this repeated exposure.

CharlyBird · 11/07/2023 17:33

My DD had a very mild case of chicken pox at around 10 months old. She never had it again but got shingles aged 3 - that was also mild and the Dr said it doesn't really bother kids that much. I thought it was excema until I saw the Dr

PeskyRooks · 11/07/2023 17:39

My dd had very mild chicken pox at age 2, then caught it again in year 6, the second time was horrendous. The doctor said if you have it mildly at first you haven't built up enough antibodies

SilkyEars · 11/07/2023 17:42

My DD had it very mildly at around 2 (about 15 spots on her back and stomach), she’s now 14 and has never had it again

RampantIvy · 11/07/2023 17:47

Yes. DD had it at four years old, but very mildly, then had it properly at nine years old and was quite poorly with it.

N0tfinished · 11/07/2023 17:50

DS1 got a very mild dose, a couple of spots on his trunk, a little feverish but otherwise fine. DS2 got it a few days later & was so so ill. Absolutely covered in spots, soaring fevers and very distressed. I had to bring him to the dr for antivirals when spots appeared in his throat and inner eye rim. I think it's more to
Do with the person's immune system, DS2 is autistic.

MargaretThursday · 11/07/2023 17:56

DD1 had it very mildly.
DD2 (who caught it from her) had it at 6 months old (but badly)

People said having it mildly/having it before a year meant they'd catch it again.
They're both adults, and have had various friends (and ds) with it and haven't caught it again.
However one of their friends has had it three times despite being over a year and had it badly 2/3 times.

Whyemseeaye · 11/07/2023 17:58

Both my DC have had very mild chicken pox several times now.

Eldest DC has been coming up in spots for around eight weeks this time. As one batch clear up another batch appear.

I'm just carrying on as normal in terms of schools etc

Whatthediddlyfeck · 11/07/2023 17:58

My dd had 7 spots as a toddler, and didn’t get it again when her wee brother and cousin had it when they were toddlers
I had it fairly badly as a child then got it again as an adult 🤷🏼‍♀️

justme2022 · 11/07/2023 18:01

My daughter had it in November when she was 18 months. She had 7 spots. Just got it again. Spot count, grand total of 2.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 11/07/2023 18:06

That's a real mixed bag! That's interesting.

Id rather he got it for a second time now, and not when he's an adult as they would be incredibly unpleasant.

I had it at 14 and it was very mild but I also had it at 21 and it was dreadful. The week of my finals at uni!

Ponderingwindow · 11/07/2023 18:12

I had it mildly twice before I got it seriously and finally gained immunity. My mother was very annoyed.

cocksstrideintheevening · 11/07/2023 18:16

Yep Dts had a very mild dose when they were two. No more than ten spots.

Got it again age 6 and one ended up in hospital with suspected sepsis, they were off school for nearly four weeks.

I wish I had known about the vaccine. This was some time ago. Not sure if there is any befit to vaccinating if he has already had it?

CavierBreak · 11/07/2023 18:35

I'm dithering whether to vaccinate my 6 yr old. Her elder brother had it when she was a newborn and breastfeeding and she has been around it loads since, including in her class, but never caught it.

But I understand she'd have to keep being vaccinated every 10 years until she can no longer get pregnant. So I'm dithering!

Just wish she'd catch it naturally soon!

LysHastighed · 11/07/2023 18:40

You could always vaccinate.
Btw the idea that it wears off after 10 years is no longer current.

prettybird · 11/07/2023 18:46

Ds got we think a really mild case when he was about 6 months old (a couple of spots on his back that his grandmother spotted) and still being breastfed, so probably sharing my own immunity.

Anyway, he never caught it again, despite outbreaks at both the childminder and at primary school.

BUT, age 14, he then got shingles the day before going off on a week long school ski trip Shock So we now know he's definitely had chicken pox Grin

Fortunately, the shingles band was around his torso, so he was still able to go skiing, just under strict instruction not to let anyone touch his skin and it saved me money as I didn't need to buy swimming trunks in the event that the weather was bad and they had to go swimming instead

Also fortunately, he didn't get much pain with it although the GP sent him off with anti-vitals and suitable painkillers.

Riverseawoods · 11/07/2023 18:54

My DD was vaccinated and has had chicken pox 4 timed.
My DS has had it 3 times, 2 of them quite badly.
