not the ones at events and schools. one has just gone round our estate. I just can't work out how they make money(kids are still at school)

Occasionally, but my kids are adults now so don’t get so excited by them. They do a roaring trade from the neighbourhood children - and accept cards/ Apple Pay now!

We have one that usually comes around once a weekon a Saturday afternoon. My daughter will always have something even if I don't. He is a Mr Whippy type van.

Yippee it’s Mr Whippy.

Balls it’s Walls

There’s one that parks across the road from us around 4 pm every day in the warmer months. He’s always pretty busy, and surprisingly cheap for London.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/07/2023 19:06

We are steady customers - ours is £2 for a bunny ears, £1.50 for a regular slushy.

BarelyLiterate · 11/07/2023 19:10

No, because I don’t like that nasty soft whippy stuff they dispense from machines. If they sold proper ice cream, I would be much more likely to buy one.
My local one still does a good trade, though. On nice days he parks his van opposite the entrance to our local country park, ignoring the parking restrictions. He always gets tickets, but seems to accept them as the cost of doing business in a prime spot.

Maybe they sell 'special 99s' like ours did (£10 back in the day)

And cogs 😂

RicherThanYews · 11/07/2023 19:13

My local ice cream van guy is still going strong and he used to park in our school every lunchtime, that was 20 years ago and I still see him around the parks and at family event days.

I would love to but I don't have one where I live. I love a good cone from the ice cream man with plenty of sauce!

magnolia1997 · 11/07/2023 19:15

Not since a friend told me she saw a squirrel that had got into one overnight licking the ice cream nozzle thing 🤢

Ours sells proper scooped ice cream that they make themselves

They don't make their money from ice cream

Others have beaten me to it.

I once remarked how odd it was that we had an ice cream van operating all year round.

DH commented that they were probably supplying something else!

Anyway, I would still buy one from a van. It's a rare treat.

ReeseWitherfork · 12/07/2023 14:55

One day a week, DS gets picked up from nursery at 12.30 and without fail the ice cream van arrives at 1. So he has an ice cream man ice cream every week.

The elderly couple on the end always get one too (actually they get three between them, not worked that out) and the lady across the road gets one for her grandkids if she’s got them.
