Childhood vaccinations?

Vaccin · 11/07/2023 14:40

Could anybody point me in the direction of somewhere I can find reliable information surrounding childhood vaccinations please?

I wasn't vaccinated and I would really like to know where to go to get the knowledge I need to make an educated and informed decision so that I can do what's best for my baby.

Thank you, I've seen this but didn't find it very informative

You can also ask your GP if you can be vaccinated at the same time.

PeachesOnTheBeaches · 11/07/2023 14:55

What’s best for your baby is to be vaccinated.

Hobbi · 11/07/2023 14:56

The educated and informed decision is to get yourself and your children vaccinated. I suspect you're spoiling for an argument though.

Vaccin · 11/07/2023 14:59

Thanks Everyone will take a look at those links now. I have spoken with GP but didn't get much information and was told to conduct my own research.

Why would I be looking for an argument?

@Vaccin
"Why would I be looking for an argument?"

Because it's 2023 and safe, effective vaccines have changed the world for children for generations now. Those who seem to be unaware aware of this often pretend they're asking for advice on forums like this, before eventually spouting some half-baked nonsense, revealing themselves as anti-vaxxers or Wakefield acolytes. Apologies if you genuinely didn't know how important it is to vaccinate your children.

Vaccin · 11/07/2023 15:33

@Hobbi this is a genuine post and I deliberately didn't go to AIBU. Because I was raised in a family who chose not to vaccinate, I'm now in a position where I need to evaluate that choice and do what's best for my own family. But I don't want to blindly go along with it, hence asking for links to info. Sorry if this came across otherwise

If you ask for information you will get two types of answers. The accepted, accredited, used safely for generations advice condensed into the NHS information which provides the schedule agreed by the multiple doctors and scientists who advice the JCVI. Or random individuals on the Internet who will try to convince you that their "truth" has never been accepted by the mainstream media and the fact that it hasn't been accepted is proof of a vast conspiracy.

I know which one I trust.

mindutopia · 11/07/2023 16:18

If you are in the UK, the NHS is the best place to look as information from outside the UK won't necessarily be appropriate to a UK context (different infection incidence/prevalence and different vaccination schedules).

If you want to look directly at the scientific evidence, try a search on google scholar or on pubmed. You'll probably need to search for the specific vaccination (so MMR or Tdap or chicken pox vaccine rather than 'childhood vaccinations'). Nearly all publicly funded research now needs to be open access, so you should be able to read the full text of the publications, but at the very least, you will be able to read the abstract which will give you a quick overview of what the article is about.

Where else do you want to find information from if not the NHS or WHO?

BubziOwl · 11/07/2023 16:27

OP, perhaps it might help if you told us what information specifically it is you're looking for? Or what concerns you have?

bakewellbride · 11/07/2023 16:29

Please vaccinate your child. Dh is a paramedic and trust me he sees the children who aren't vaccinated in his line of work and it's horrible.

I've read through all of the NHS stuff posted on here and that has helped.

I was mainly wanting to know what vaccines they give and why they are beneficial or necessary. I also wanted to read about the pros and cons of having or not having them.

Read the essay Roald Dahl wrote when his daughter died of complications from having measles. It would break anyone's heart. We have vaccinations for a reason and it is free for a reason. To maintain herd immunity you need 95% of the public vacationed

Vaccin · 11/07/2023 16:47

@YorkshireIndie I haven't read the article but I've had them as an adult and was very ill. This was one of the things that made me want to look into vaccinations.

Pros

  • protection from diseases that can have lifelong effects

  • you don't have to gamble that your child will be lucky enough to get a mild case if they did catch them

  • you don't need to take unnecessary time off work to nurse your child through mealses/mumps/diptheria, etc

  • your significantly reduce the risk of your child dying or becomes disabled from complications associated with these diseases

  • you never have the worry of your child catching things like polio or particular types of meningitis or tetanus

  • the risk of complications from the diseases is far, far higher than the risk of complications from the vaccines

Cons
  • your baby will probably not like being jabbed and might cry a bit

so would you want to watch your child
go through what you did knowing you could have prevented it?

CurlewKate · 11/07/2023 17:59

If you have A levels and start now, you could be an immunologist in, say, 9 years? Then you can do your own research......
