UPF/Whole foods

If trying to eat all whole foods/homemade etc is tinned fruit ok? Tinned in its juice rather than syrup, or is the fact that its been processed not ok?

Most are. But you will need to check the ingredients. Juice from concentrate is a UPF.

Sometimes UPF is actually a good choice. Why are you considering tinned fruit? Cost-effective way to provide yourself and your family with essential vitamins and minerals and fibre? If the choice is tinned fruit or no fruit - buy tinned.

Not all UPF is equal.

This is just another food scare story. They have found a correlation between UPF and poor health. That is very different from identifying any causal mechanism. Who eats more UPF food? Probably the poor, maybe the sick or disabled? People who already have a poor health outlook for a whole range of reasons.

Does anyone really think it’s healthier to eat Hagen Dazs strawberry rather than chocolate flavour? A little bit of critical thinking is needed here.

GS, I agree. It’s just the latest food / diet trend.

Of course we could all do with eating less shite.

But, the folk who eat the most UPF are unlikely to be reading the new book by Dr Whoever. It’s bullshit.

There is a difference between processed (pretty much everything we eat other than raw fruit and veg is processed in some way) and ultra processed.

Not sure that tinned fruit in its own juice is classed as a UPF

I wouldn't call it a food scare story. The science backs up the claim that added chemicals in food can lead to adverse health effects.
It's probably true that poorer people eat more UPFs (although I'm not sure how this can be proved), but a general awareness of the unhealthiness of them can't be a bad thing.

Tinned fruit is better than no fruit. Fresh fruit in season is probably better, but don't beat yourself up over it.

Having said that, I've been eating 30 different fruit and veg a week, after a health scare two years ago. Decaff coffee, lots of water, almost no alcohol, less sugar, wholemeal bread/pasta/couscous.

It takes effort & discipline cooking from scratch all the time but I admit I feel much much better, loads of energy and easy to hold a steady weight.

Taken to the extremes it’s a fad.

Taken in the spirit of ‘eat as much real food as you can, especially plants’ it’s just an extension of existing knowledge.

I briefly joined a facebook group about UPF where the driver seemed to be finding package/processed foods that counted as non UPF so you could think of them as OK. Seems pretty pointless to game the system like that to me.

Except no one seems to know how we’d actually feed the planet on only whole foods and plants do they? There isn’t enough space.

So a solution like this is a solution only for the small minority of people who can afford it. It’s got nothing to do with increasing overall health and is, like all these fad diets, purely individualistic.

If you are stuck just go vegetarian- it takes about 10'to 100 times more land per. Kg of protein or a calorie with meat than veg
