Just that really, posting here for quick traffic; can oral suspension amoxicillin be left in a cupboard until it's opened and then refrigerated?

It's not refrigerated on the shelves so it'll be fine.

Just keep it in the fridge when you've opened it as you say.

PossiblyNotOne · 11/07/2023 10:29

Before it’s opened oral antibiotics are powder which are then reconstituted with water, once it’s made up it needs to be in the fridge.

It's not in the same state in the shelf though

@nasanas

Sorry, how is it not in the same state on the shelf? It's a bottled liquid 'displayed' on a shelf in a chemist in a bottle. Exactly the same state you take it home in.

PossiblyNotOne · 11/07/2023 11:00

No it isn’t. It’s a powder. Once it’s made up with water jt has an expiry of 7 days.

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 11/07/2023 11:00

It's powder and is made by the pharmacist before you collect it.

As the PP posted before me. It's a powder which is made up by the pharmacy when you collect it.

billyt · 11/07/2023 11:15

OP said it's Oral Suspension

It is. When you get it.

Clarista · 11/07/2023 11:25

As PP have said it needs to be stored in the fridge as soon as it’s in liquid form. We once had to travel with some and filled a large flask with chilled water and ice, then put the bottle in and closed the lid- this kept it cool until we arrived, could be an option?

Sometimes it’s made up, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve had it dispensed as powder before so that it wouldn’t go off (long prescription, multiple bottles, I just asked for all but the first one as powder). It’s very easy to make up (literally just add the correct amount of water and shake) so you could ask your pharmacist for it in powder form if not required immediately.

nasanas · 11/07/2023 11:41

@Blueskysunflower

That makes no difference to the post I was responding to claiming it is already a liquid in the shelf.

morenore · 11/07/2023 11:42

It's come as liquid in a bottle.

@morenore

A sealed bottle in a box? Not prepared by the Pharmacist?

morenore · 11/07/2023 11:45

@billyt yes

That's correct, the pharmacy make it up before they give it to you.

morenore · 11/07/2023 11:48

@nasanas so if it's been in the cupboard for a few days (sealed) and then refrigerated once opened, is it safe?

OP posts:
Clarista · 11/07/2023 12:00

I used to work in a pharmacy and amoxicillin was always provided to us in powder form. When a prescription is ordered the powder is mixed with water to make up a liquid, then put back in the box and handed over. Once the powder and liquid have mixed it needs to go in the fridge. There was never any option for one already in a bottle in liquid form like calpol is.

Ive not worked in a pharmacy in a good while however, so could be that there’s a new version out? Having said that, when I got amoxicillin for my daughter last year it was the same powder to liquid format which suggests no change.

It sounds like you’ve been given a bottle and put it in the cupboard? If that’s the case then no, I don’t think you can use it. Whether you’ve opened it or not is irrelevant, as the pharmacist opens the bottle to make it up before giving it to you- therefore, in any format I’ve ever seen, by the time it’s a liquid it needs to be in the fridge.

I suggest you call the pharmacist and check, just in case you’ve been given a bottle of some pre mix I’ve not heard of. You could also post a pic of the label, bottle or SmPC and I can see if it’s the powdered dosage. That’s all I can suggest.

Read the instructions or ask your pharmacist, not being rude but this isn't a question I am comfortable answering.

morenore · 11/07/2023 12:18

Have called the pharmacy and they're going to replace. Thanks all.
