How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 11/07/2023 07:13

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

You're right - potential child abuse, government, media and state corruption,, and the problems of pornography and drug addiction are really 'vacuous' compared to your interests

@Superfood you lose the moral high ground from the word go - all you're doing on this thread is speculating. You might as well be taking bets for all the good you're doing in those very worthy and important areas you've listed. Plus you've stalked my previous posts in order to try and shame me.

There's nothing hypocritical in what I've said on this thread. You, on the other hand...

How would these things ever come to light if no one was allowed to comment on them? Do you think if everyone "behaved" and didn't gossip/ no one was interested, any of these people would ever be held to account?

I’m sure they didn’t have permission but if your adult child was a crack addict wouldn’t you try and stop any funds going into his account?

Not the best idea to inform the tabloids then, given that if/when this young man is named he's going to be able to sell his story and buy a loooooot of crack with the proceeds.

Can anyone explain to me why this is bigger news than Schofield please? Why are the government involved in this but they weren't involved with the ITV/Schofield situation?

ITV is a commercial corporation funded by advertisers paying significant sums for advertising slots in between programmes. This is how they operate.

BBC is not a commercial corporation but funded by the Licence Fee (ie a tax that we have to legally pay if we own a TV.) Companies also have to pay a Licence if they have a TV on their premises for staff etc. It's basically a public funded operation and would not exist without this funding.

BigFatLiar · 11/07/2023 11:43

Doesn't matter if its true or not people want to believe it and will believe it.

I doubt much can be done about it as if they haven't actually named anyone we're all free to speculate. They can make up a story and just let you believe what you want, at least it sells papers and gives mumsnetters something to talk about.

Because they threw Schofield out the window and didnt protect his name?

And we can look at millions of others who do.

there is absolutely nothing to suggest that the sun and this family are in cahoots and lying about evidence in a random attempt to go after this man of all people. I find it really odd that some folks actually think that’s more believable than what’s being accused could happen. Unbelievable in fact, but there you go.

I wouldn't believe anything from either side unless I saw the evidence myself. I don't think either is implausible, but I do know the Sun have been accused on many occasions of printing made up stories e.g. Colleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy.

All of this, and then also we have a right wing government who would like to defund the BBC, and the Sun is a right wing newspaper owned by a media baron who'd like to do the same.

So why is the Sun protecting his name?

Not just mumsnetters

Loads are talking about it, even those who post it’s beneath them to do so

Had to laugh at this headline - Allegations about a BBC presenter are "shocking and concerning", Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says

seriously Sunak, get your own house in order first before you start pointing fingers, especially after all the allegations this week of sexist, misogynistic behaviour of older male politicians towards younger female staff.

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 11:59

BloodyHellKen · 11/07/2023 11:36

good question, maybe because ITV is a private company and the BBC is funded by the public?

Maybe because the current government detests the BBC and The Sun is a right leaning paper. Sunak didn’t bother to comment on the findings of the Privileges Committee yet has managed to air his views on this. That tells me all I need to know.

I really don't understand why someone isn't saying that to him.

So why is the Sun protecting his name?

Probably on legal advice.

Some of us aren't talking about 'it'. We're talking about people like you. But I wouldn't expect you to notice that distinction, it doesn't fit your agenda.

HurdyGurdy19 · 11/07/2023 12:02

I'm as naïve as a baby when it comes to Only Fans/selling pics online etc, so I don't know if it is like a forum like mumsnet, where you choose a user name that would protect your real identity, or if you have to use your own name, either as a "provider" or an "end user".

I'm wondering if a late teen/early 20s person would even recognise the name that's being bandied around (if the person's real name was used), unless the end user told them in a "do you know who I am" kind of way.

Are they end-to-end video calls? If so, again, would a young person even recognise the end user if they saw them?

Also, in some kind of defence of the parents, maybe they went to the Sun with a view to receiving payment - maybe not immediately - as the only way they could raise funds to send their child to somewhere like The Priory. Who knows? Was the young person a crack cocaine user/addict before allegedly selling the images, or did they start to use the drug as a result of suddenly having large sums of money coming their way?

To many grey areas, and no one is coming out of this with any credibility.

Efacsen · 11/07/2023 12:04

Met police have asked BBC to pause their investigation whilst they look into the allegations - BBC

Hide the thread already. It’s not making you feel good

Well quite.

So everyone, BBC included, will be under the same legal restriction.

Either everyone – especially The Sun – is trying to "protect his name", or no one is.

Yes, you're probably right. It's all political, being controlled by an evil Tory Party and nothing to do with anything else at all. This is bigger than Schofield was simply down to Tory dislike of the BBC and nothing at all to do with the difference in how ITV and the BBC operate 😂

I am right. Glad you find it so amusing.

HappiDaze · 11/07/2023 12:14

Be interesting to see what the police unearth re the relationship between the mother the stepdad and this poor 20 Yr old

It's quite out there for a 20 Yr old to be addicted to crack in the UK

Nottherightname · 11/07/2023 12:14

What does “further scoping work” by the police mean? Why would the BBC have been asked to pause their investigation while that happens?

Efacsen · 11/07/2023 12:15

Whilst Murdoch was dandling baby Wilfrid on his knee he told Johnson to 'get rid of the BBC'

nasanas · 11/07/2023 12:15

It's really not sadly
