How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 11/07/2023 07:13

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

@ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing Yes...blackmail tends to be about keeping things quiet, not blowing it up publicly.

If you go onto Twitter, it's the most trending # and very easily found.

@ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing the article in the sun doesn't suggest the parents provided a copy of the bank statements to the sun.

Re the ‘how has the teen afforded top lawyers?’ question, I would just like to add my experience:

Before he died, my dad’s name was floated as part of a group litigation against a huge company in our city. We had a couple of firms call our house (before the days of mobiles) and one turned up at his work to take him to lunch and talk about his options. If there’s the possibility for publicity and £££££, people like that are often keen to help.

My guess is that the then-child has received a significant payout in order to shut them up.

And maybe the thought of going on trial feels like too much for him, who knows!

@JRHartley72 Yeah...that's possible. It's like a vicious game of chess...waiting for the next move.

Yes, I see what you mean about the chess. Do you think it's remotely possible that Sun could be waiting for the BBC presenter to deny something, anything, and then they'll spring their trap? And the BBC presenter suspects this is the case, and is unsure of what the Sun have got hold of, and which bits he can deny, and so is keeping schtum?

Juanmartinez · 11/07/2023 10:25

My friends daughter is a crack and heroin addict, I can totally understand parents going to any lengths to make it stop.

This is starting to feel like one of those viral campaigns pumped up around some desperately sick child and used to disrupt a hospital. Where an emotive topic is used to rile up a mob and send them after a target, to disrupt and to and distract from other news.

As a PP pointed out, yesterday Boris Johnson failed to meet the deadline to hand over his phone to the Covid Inquiry. That's after the government lost the court case in which it spent our money trying to hide the phone contents from the Covid Inquiry.

Yet what are the front pages filled with today?

There's a cover up going on all right. Just not the one being claimed.

Boris Johnson fails to hand over mobile with Covid WhatsApps before inquiry deadline

Device containing Covid-era messages up until May 2021 remains in former PM’s possession

That is a good point. I was wondering why the person being named online so much wasn't defending themselves and their good name like Rylan, JV, NC etc.

If I was being wrongly accused of something the first thing I'd do is deny it

Don't do it people.

It's all over twitter if you want to have a look.

Well that would also make sense. I guess The Sun is safe from being sued as they haven't named anyone, I'd be surprised if they don't have some evidence to back it up so yes...everyone is holding fire and waiting for the other to blink.

He's 20. He's an adult. His behaviour now is nothing to do with his parents and they had no right to go to the press. If they believe illegal activity had taken place when he was underage it was a matter for the police. Not for the world to know.

Absolutely. No need for any of this to be public. How awful for all having privacy invaded. The parents are either fools or money grabbers - possibly both.

stbrandonsboat · 11/07/2023 10:30

I expect the presenter and the BBC will have no case to answer - even a moral one - and the young person and family's lives will be left in tatters and irretrievably broken 'cos commodities 🤷🏻‍♀️

There clearly isn't a cover up about Johnsons failure to submit because it's in numerous newspapers and all over the internet - ditto JO wedding.

I've learnt more about BJ's WhatsApp and JO wedding/email over the past few days because people keep talking about it and saying it's a massive cover up!!

Yep - who else this week has been accused of having sex with a sixteen year old “so drunk they can’t stand”, in a pub toilet? Oh yes, a fellow newspaper editor and mate of Rupert Murdoch, who has just had his wedding disrupted. Lucky this story came out to deflect attention from that.

Has Osborne threatened legal action over that email? Bit sus if he makes noises about it but doesn't pursue it.

StefanosHill · 11/07/2023 10:32

Tim Davie has a scheduled conference anyway today, it’ll likely come up

I don't think they're safe at all. There's a legal term called 'jigsaw identification' and I have a vague memory that all the presenter has to do is prove 12 people worked out it was him from their coverage to make a legal claim.

BloodyHellKen · 11/07/2023 10:33

PomRuns · 11/07/2023 10:30

Or maybe they are just really worried about their drug addict child who prostitutes themselves to make money like a parent would be.

PomRuns · 11/07/2023 10:34

Why do people keep calling the person a child- they are 20 now.
it just adds to the drama I guess.
Not excusing the wrongness if this did start when the person was 17 but if OF was involved, how would bbc bloke know.

Wheresthebeach · 11/07/2023 10:35

@JRHartley72 Oh yes...I think you're right. I seem to recall reading that case about 12 footballers (?) with an unproven accusation being made about a team member and they all won damages. Bearing that in mind it would be astonishing if the Sun didn't have more proof. Damages could be huge.

nasanas · 11/07/2023 10:35
