I know it's the Express - but the data map is interesting

Small boat arrivals: Where are they coming from? MAPPED | UK | News | Express.co.uk

They have used Home office data to map the location of the 43,000 people who came to the UK up to March.

12,094 came from Albania
That didn't surprise me - I know that's been in the headlines.

But the rest is mainly from countries that you can see people fleeing war and horrendous regimes from -

Afghanistan - 8429
Then In third was Iran (5,450), followed by Iraq (4,041) and Syria (2,596)

Sudan - 1712
Egypt - 1230
India - 1321
Turkey - 1189
Vietnam - 489
Ethiopia - 453

The rest of the countries don't seem to have many people coming

What of course is not shown in those statistics is the people who have fled those countries and the numbers in refugee camps near where they used to live and the numbers who have gone to other countries.

108,000,000 people who are displaced at the moment.
6.5 million Syrian refugees
5.7 million Afghan refugees
5.7 million Ukrainian refugees

These numbers kind of put things into perspective when you look at what is happening in the world and you look at the countries people are coming from. I can understand why someone would want to leave countries like Afghanistan, Iran etc - and most of them do not make the trip to the UK

Some facts here

Global Trends Report 2022 | UNHCR

Where the UK's small boat arrivals are coming from - mapped

Over 1,000 people crossed the Channel in small boats in just two days last week for the first time this year.

Albania, Egypt, Turkey, India and Vietnam. Wasn't aware that there were existing major conflicts in any of these countries

So you only picked the countries that had few people.

There are other reasons to flee a country apart from war.

Repression, crackdown.

We do have a duty towards legitimate asylum seekers of course, no one can argue that women and children aren't treated abominably in many countries

Is someone fleeing conflict, fleeing repression a legitimate asylum seeker?

If people are concerned about the country being "full up" they should direct their attention at other areas of immigration which are growing rapidly. For example over 20.000 domestic servant visas were issued last year. I would rather prioritise refugees than allow wealthy people to import servants

The reality is from my lived experience is that I don’t think the people coming here realise they’ll face racism etc from other immigrants - I think our perception of people arriving from other countries ( or as they are perjoratively termed in Toxteth ‘Freshies’ ) - is of one homogenous population -but one whose languages we don’t speak nor customs follow - is an erroneous one ☝️ They are placed in racially mixed communities with whom their ‘home countries may not have good relations because of religious or ethnic differences this causes a multitude of problems - Racism is not only white/black These people are very often unwitting vectors of unidentifiable diseases too which often adds to the mix

Dontlistitonfacebook · 12/07/2023 13:48

@eveoha do you actually know what a disease vector is?

eveoha · 12/07/2023 15:23

thankyou i do now so will rescind and retract the word ‘vector’ and use carriers 👍🏿

eveoha · 12/07/2023 15:26

Thanks for the data re ‘number of potential carriers’ and number of said diseases - makes me even more anxious re potential damage illegal immigrants may impose

For decades politicians have talked tough to win elections and not been honest with populations that migration is both needed and going to increase anyway, whatever their policies, because people are displaced by conflict (and economics) and will be displaced by climate change. The figures are very interesting, thanks for posting OP.

Update - I now realise I was right and humans can be vectors - 😐
