Why can’t I drink alcohol as I get older?!

Anyone else?

I’m mid-forties and can’t even drink a glass of wine without feeling rubbish the next day (headache, feel a little nauseous, also feel anxious).

I miss the buzz of having one glass of something! And the social tension I felt like a g&t or a glass of wine broke for me (I’m v shy).

Anything I can do to get the ability to drink back?! I have some lovely social events coming up in the next month, and I’d like to be able to have a small drink at one or two of them without ruining the following day.

@Tulipvase i know, it’s a lot of drugs so it really has to be “worth it” nowadays…. A dear friends birthday, a wedding etc. I can happily have a glass of wine with no issues but any. Pre than that and I do the regime!

Ah, I understand that.

I drink much more than MN likes so I do get it.

It’s so disappointing! I also feel a little less fun - and I think I am. I go home earlier, and go out less often. I never drank much, but I really miss the bit I did drink.

Oh @Holidaytime8 exactly this. I have been moaning to anyone who will listen about it. Im really sad that I can’t enjoy getting tipsy any more because I am panicking about how shit I will feel the following day. I had three drinks on Friday night over dinner and about 4 hours, and needed paracetamol and carbs until tea time yesterday. My day was rubbish because of it so I am just going to have to stop drinking.

This is my biggest perimenopaual symptom so far and also the shittest :(

Try a milk thistle tablet before you start drinking, works wonders.

I’ve always been a light weight drinker, small amount = feeling ill, I found if I took Milk Thistle (vitamin) it really helped, it’s good for the liver apparently. Not saying it would work for everyone though

I really can't drink much beyond two drinks a night nowadays, and sometimes even one drink is too much.

I was on a night out a few weeks ago, and had three or four drinks - it definitely wasn't worth it - I felt rough as anything for a few days xxx

This worked for me.

Big glass of water before and after each alcohol drink. Just down it. (Annoying because you’ll need the toilet a lot, but it does help).

Then take a couple paracetamol before going to sleep.

I had several years of being unable to drink more than half a glass of wine in my 50s. Oddly, I’m now 60 and not so badly affected. I still can’t drink much, but it’s nice to be able to have a whole glass of wine! No idea what’s changed.
