If you don’t like hot weather in the UK, do you go on holiday to hot places?

Genuine question, since I now live in Greece, we have a heat wave this week with no air-conditioning at home, at least I don’t anyway. And it just made me think, because I was in the UK last year when it was 40°… I wouldn’t say the heat here is different, it’s just as bad. I know a lot of people enjoy going on holiday to places like Greece, Italy etc., and but many other countries don’t have air-conditioning either and they have very big heat waves like France, Italy and yes, Greece.

I think it’s much different if you go to a hotel that has air-conditioning everywhere and a swimming pool etc. I’m just curious to know what people do if they really don’t like heat. Is it just difficult because of the lack of air conditioning do you think? I can definitely tell you, I love sunshine, and blue skies, but I’m not so keen on 40° temperatures, living on the fifth floor with no AC. I did invest in a very high powered fan on Friday, but getting AC in the flat has been a problem.

To the person from Canada, sorry I couldn’t get your username, yes, I am learning from locals what some other people do, and I’m also trying to find an easy to use unit that I can put in at least one of the rooms. A friend of mine turns her Aircon unit on for 2 to 3 hours during the day, then turns it off, and puts it on for a little bit at night.

I am visually impaired so doing things like going to a swimming pool and going to the beach can be a bit of an adventure, especially when there are loads of children around… I do have a very very small inflatable pool, but have not gotten the pump yet for it. At least I can dip my feet in it though during the really hot days.

i’m glad you are enjoying your new adventure in life, even though it is a learning curve and it does take some getting used to. I have had my home for four months, today is four months, so I’m still learning…

Happily racked up 35k steps walking around Bangkok in 35 degree heat, and went to the gym back at the hotel after.

You could get to fuck asking me to do the same in the UK.

I don't make the rules.

I haven't minded the heat in the UK at all - I sometimes switch my desk fan on but don't feel it's ever excessive (so far). I usually avoid places that are really hot in the summer months though. We mostly like to go hiking to spring/autumn is much better for us as it's a bit cooler especially if there are lots of hills.

It tends to be less humid in Greece, it's a drier heat. The humidity is awful in the UK imo.

That's exactly how I feel. I can take any amount of dry heat, but when it starts getting sticky I wilt.

To the person who went to Bangkok, I don’t know if you spoke to many Thai people while you were there, but they take three showers a day… In cold water. I think that helps a lot, it actually took me a while to get used to that, but it is refreshing. I do remember one time in Thailand though the temperature dropped to 14 Celsius, taking a cold shower, and I had no other option at the time, was a little bit chilly…

Pellegrino, I might have to go and see what one of the islands is like in the summertime, there’s a lot of humidity where I live, especially in the winter time and it’s known to make people sick, and it does feel very very muggy. I think it’s probably a lot better in other places

No, could never go to a hot country in the summer. We go away either early (April) or late (October).

DH actually loves the heat but it just makes me miserable and grumpy. Also quite often gives me a migraine. Years ago we went to the South of France in August and I hated it. DH realised there was just no point going in the summer.

We both like sightseeing so I want it cool enough to walk around comfortably. It might be slightly different if we liked sunbathing, lying by a pool reading etc but we don't.

TheHandbag · 09/07/2023 20:59

I go to the Mediterranean and hot countries between September and April as the weather is more manageable. During the summer holidays I holiday in the UK and this works for me. I can't manage temperatures above 30° because I suffer from migraines & heat is a trigger.
My method works well for me and my family, none of us are massive sun worshippers.

I’d take 40 any day , holiday or not , over the constant depressing grey rain …

The heat in the UK is no where as humid as many other med countries in July/August expecially when the African heat hits as they call it in southern Italy Sicilily/Sardinia. Its horrendous but the air con in hotel helps. I agree with some of Greece well at least KOS but I went in June and found it pleasant and and dry but I've been to Athens in August and it was very hot and HUMID and horrid so maybe depends what type of heatwave they are having and whether it's early or late summer.

gingerguineapig · 28/07/2023 18:29

No. I did go to Croatia in July about 15 years ago and we were lucky that it was hot without being stupidly hot (high 20s). And we didn't actually mind because we'd had a few wet/not very warm holidays in Scotland and Northern Ireland so it was lovely to have warm weather.

When we've been to Italy we've been in April/May or September.

I really don't like hot weather - the current 20ish degrees is ideal for me.

BelindaBears · 28/07/2023 18:32

Yes but not 40 degrees hot, we usually aim for places that will be high 20s at the most. And there’s a huge difference between being on holiday in an air conditioned hotel with a big pool for a week when you don’t really have to do anything and having to live and work and cook somewhere. I wouldn’t move to a hot country to live.
