I'm watching Earthstorm on Netflix and I can't understand why the houses are so badly built over there. Why don't they build proper brick houses? Surely it would mean far less damage and devastation come hurricane season?

Hi there, not sure why this post is popping up again but.....Living in the actual Tornado Alley of the US,WE have seen some incredible weather.
In March we watched a Tornado, not huge, roll into town. As we always stand on our porches with neighbors...some decided it was time to head inside.
But not before my 21 year old daughter got some incredible footage and sent in to the local news station, and her kept her shot up through the duration of the program that night.

In a tornado, it is all about the tornado shelter. If the tornado decides to touch down and plow through your building, it is going to be shredded no matter what it is built with. We have basements in our homes so we have a safe place to be even if our house is destroyed.

I have no idea about what is best in a hurricane.

used to live I brick house in the northeast. Very appropriate for blizzard conditions.

and I rented a sears kit house for a while. Mine was not in great shape, but that was a landlord issue. I’ve seen that new owners have refurbished it to its former glory.

I’ve lived all over the US in a wide variety of houses. Every region has idiosyncrasies that work well for that area and would be crazy elsewhere. Like the dirt basement I had in one house in the northeast. It freaked me out at first and would never work where we are now. We would have water all the time, but we never had a single problem.
