I have not long finished the book 'the tattooist of Auschwitz' and have found it completely harrowing and yet so moving at the same time.

The way it was written was frankly remarkable. I just wondered if anybody else has any recommendations on books around Auschwitz? It's something in my opinion, that should be very much known about.

I should add this isn't about Auschwitz but it was set in WW2 and was very good (well I enjoyed it!)

Rena's Promise
Five Chimneys
Return To Auschwitz
Lily's Promise

Hannas Suitcase (For young adults, but very moving)

I Have Lived A Thousand Years (again young adult, but very good, and the first in a trilogy)

I've read many more over the years, but can't quite recall the titles just now.

Tattooist of Auschwitz is one of my DD's favourite books. We've both read it numerous times.

The only book that she will say is even better, is Cilka's Journey by the same author. Its the sequel to Tattooist, following what happened to Cilka after Auschwitz was liberated. Sadly her life did not improve for quite a while.

I haven't actually read this one, but my daughter says it's more harrowing than the first book, but very emotional and excellently written. It left her in floods of tears. She is 16 now but first read it a few years ago; I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to all children of this age though,it is obviously a book written primarily for adults.

Ooh yes, Book Thief is another good read.

We don't get the fuss made about Boy in the Striped Pyjamas though. Not particularly believable and we didn't think well written compared to others; although I do accept ours isn't a popular view!

All the light we cannot see. Amazing book

Another vote for The Escape Artist. I found it utterly gripping.

fancreek · 08/07/2023 21:25

My two pence is to be careful with these books.

The author of the Tatooist was the subject of a lot of complaints by Lale Sokolov's family and by leading holocaust organisations - for making things up and going against their wishes.

Just be aware that these are works of fiction designed to sell, and not true accounts designed to raise awareness.

LoopyGremlin · 08/07/2023 21:46

Also agree with The Escape Artist. Issues with Boy in Striped Pyjamas and also Tattooist of Auschwitz means I wouldn't recommend them.

dayswithaY · 08/07/2023 21:50

The Tattooist was a gripping book, but I have since read about how “problematic “ it is which is a shame. Best enjoy it as a work of fiction that is loosely based on a true story.
