Daily electrolyte drink?

Could anybody recommend one? I saw Davinia Taylor talking about this for brain fog in particular but I can't afford her sachets and I'm bamboozled by what's on Amazon. Definitely don't need it for sport but I'm thinking for everyday hydration and the afore mentioned brain fog and bloating.

I was taking them daily for a few months (tried several) as a recommendation for my low BP & dizziness. However, I have had brain fog for years (M.E, Fibro) and can’t say they helped at all for that.

What has helped the brain fog is these. Every time I take them I feel better, I run out and, a while down the line, I feel awful again. When I re buy these and just feel so much better in a relatively short space of time. I think Holland and Barrett often have them on buy one get one for 1p or whatever their offer is.

Thanks so much for this recommendation!

Your body should do a good job of keeping your electrolytes balanced.

You should be getting them through your regular food and your body should be keeping them in balance. Obviously if you lose a lot through illness such as diarrhoea or excess dehydration, then it's important to replace them.

Not sure whey you would need a daily electrolyte drink. You're just going to be getting rid of it in your urine.

A pinch of himilayan/malden salt into filtered water is a cheap way to increase electrolytes. Good for detoxing but not sure if it helps brain fog.

It's what plants need!

Coconut water is good

You need to be careful about supplements unless you have a diagnosed deficiency, as some minerals can inhibit your uptake of other minerals, some vitamins have an adverse effect in large quantities.

I would recommend ditching all ultra processed food (including supplements that weren’t prescribed by a physician) and giving it 4 weeks to see the effect.

Sodium chloride, you mean.
There's no such thing as detox, that's what your liver is for.
Unless you have d&v or are dehydrated for some reason, your electrolytes should be just fine.

AnnaMagnani · 08/07/2023 09:59

Your liver manages to detox you perfectly well without supplements.

Unless you are doing something like extreme exercise or have a medical condition, our bodies are also excellent at managing electrolyte balance.

I love ViDrate. Helped me through breastfeeding a newborn in 35 degree weather! Fantastic stuff.

Ingredients
Coconut Water Powder, Citric Acid, Watermelon Flavour, Aquamin MG Magnesium, Aquamin F Calcium, Dandelion Root Powder, Himalayan Salt, Horsetail Extract, Colour (Beetroot), Debittered Stevia, Vitamin B5 (as Calcium Pantothenate), Black Pepper Extract (95% Piperine), Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate)

Honestly, I wouldn't.
Just eat a healthy diet avoiding most UPF

I have occasionally had a Dioralyte sachet when feeling extra dehydrated. A retired surgeon told me this once.

LMNT · 08/07/2023 11:02

Most ready made ones have horrid artificial sweeteners and flavours.

Use low salt as it has potassium and sodium. Put it in water with some lemon juice. Most whole foods will give you all the magnesium you need.

WiltingWallfower · 08/07/2023 12:00

I have a condition that necessitates daily electrolytes. I found Nuun Sport was one of the most palatable and uses stevia rather than artificial sweeteners. They do them with and without caffeine (I have to have without).

To be honest though, electrolytes won’t help brain fog unless it’s caused by dehydration in the first place. So with no underlying medical condition or fluid loss through sweating/diarrhoea you just need to make sure you stay hydrated through normal fluid intake.

A grain of celtic sea salt on your tongue before a glass of water. Look into the benefits, it might help you.

Why?

You get sodium, potassium and chloride ions in your diet. Your body is very good at regulating the levels via your kidneys.

So if you are taking excess electrolytes, your body will just try and get rid of them.

Unless you take too much - which can lead to health issues.

It contains 82 minerals. You can look into the benefits yourself if you like, or not. I’m not forcing you to take it!

Most of those should come through diet. I can't actually see a list of the minerals on the website.

Your cell osmolality is mainly determined by sodium ions .

Trace minerals are found in the food we eat.

So take your expensive Celtic sea salt but you're really just pissing it away

escript · 08/07/2023 14:13

I always put an electrolyte tablet in my drink bottle when running (cheap SIS sort). I don't think it would do any harm to have one daily.

Do they help with brain fog and bloating? I didn't know that.

Look, I’m not asking you to take it, read about, do anything at all! Some people want to, some people don’t, some people have no interest at all. Live and let live.
