If you are plus size do you genuinely feel confident...

in a bikini?

I'm watching body positivity videos on TIKTOK (followed 2 women, now my fyp is flooded) and wishing I felt as confident as they look

I will be wearing a bikini when I go away next week as I hate swimming costumes but I absolutely won't feel confident

Because some people don't feel confident no matter what their size? Discomfort isn't exclusive to the obese

I'm an 18 , sometimes a 16 in the right thing- I just about can wear a tankini- a bikini -er no!! I'm 61and a nice one piece looks ok - I've got great (if big) boobs, and good legs but far too much on tummy and arse!!

Panfriedscallops · 07/07/2023 22:24

I wear a bikini at size 18 but with lipodaema my arms and legs are the worst bits. You can't cover those up. Doesn't matter what I wear I'm embarrassed and feel judged but at least I'm comfortable.

Even at 60 I'm not a drain on the nhs I'm never ill.
Get on with your holiday and leave me alone!

You’re not plus sized so why do you feel the need to post?

That’s horrible, of course she can post.

toomanyleggings · 07/07/2023 22:27

I’m a 12-14 which I think they call mid size these days and don’t feel confident whatsoever. I see size 16-18 women with much better shapes than me.

ehb102 · 07/07/2023 22:29

I have lipoedema so no, but my disease has deformed my body, as has the accompanying veinous insufficiency. If my body was large but smooth like normal fat I totally would. It really isn't though.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 07/07/2023 22:32

Size 20. I was going to say yes I would wear one but I've just packed to go away tomorrow and this thread reminded me I haven't packed a bikini, just three swimsuits. Ah well...

Workyticket · 07/07/2023 22:33

I have lymphedema so I'm buggered below my boob line with my big belly and weird feet and legs!

I also wish I was normal/smooth fat rather than weird shape fat!

I feel so sorry for posters that can't embrace their figures
Just got back from hols, saw fabulous bigger women in bikinis, they looked fab!

I'm a size 32.
Nobody's embracing that.
They couldn't get their arms round it for a start.

Hellostrawberries · 08/07/2023 07:18

I'm a size 20 and feel 100% confident these days (mid 50s). All down to the realization that hits you at a certain age that no one is remotely interested in the body size of a random stranger! I wear a high waisted bikini on holiday and walk around the pool area with no self consciousness whatsoever. Honestly no one's looking.

Pedestriancrossing · 08/07/2023 09:48

I am in my 50s and overweight (trying to tackle this but it is slow!). It occurred to me the other day that I have never worn a bikini, even in my slimmer days I have never felt sufficiently confident to wear one.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/07/2023 09:57

If something is comfortable, I'm confident.

I don't find bikinis comfortable and I'm not a fan of getting sunburn on bits of skin that are still as white and unblemished (ignoring stretch marks) as they were when I was 5 - but a sports bra type top and high waisted shorts or leggings with a high level of compression is comfortable and it would reduce the area needing copious amounts of sunblock.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/07/2023 10:00

@IncompleteSenten - ha!! I like your style!

Workyticket · 08/07/2023 18:29

I've been real life shopping today for bikini bottoms- there's nothing!

I have some old ones from pour moi that I love. Ordered the 'same' ones last week and they're nothing like them - stiff and skin tight!

My awful hanging tummy rules out so many styles. My mission tonight is to order a load - while I've still got time to 🙈

I'm a pole dance instructor so my work wear is basically a bikini. I'm plus size and feel absolutely confident in pretty much no clothing, I compete too so am often on stage in front of strangers and find it fine. A lot of women I speak to because of my job do not and this is regardless of their size.

Aqua22a · 08/07/2023 18:43

Size 20-22 here and yes, providing I've been working out and the bikini is the right style for me - idealky high waist shorts style bottoms and a halterneck top. I wore one from New Look on holiday a few months ago.

That said, I usually wear a sarong on my lower half when moving say from beach to bar.

Pancake678 · 08/07/2023 18:44

Not really. I tent to avoid mirrors so I don't know how bad I am. I had a award ceremony today and it was awful. I wish I hadn't gone.

Gonnawashmymouthout · 08/07/2023 18:46

Nah, I’m a size 18, 40 year old mum with a massive stomach. It seems to have a weird muscle pushed out, and scarring from operations

happy in a tankini though.

in my early 20s I was a size 16 and perfectly happy in a bikini: even on holiday with my size 8 friends

Topseyt123 · 08/07/2023 18:56

I'm certainly a plus size (24) and can never imagine myself feeling comfortable in a bikini.

I only wear one-piece swimming costumes. I feel that they do hide a multitude of sins and keep at least a semblance of control of my belly. ☹️

Annaisatwat · 08/07/2023 19:01

No, I look terrible.

I’m a size 16 now (and still on my way down), but at my biggest I was a size 22. I couldn’t stand for long without my back hurting, my knees hurt, I was on my way to type 2 diabetes. My skin was awful because of all the shit I ate. Nothing to be confident about, I was killing my self.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 08/07/2023 19:03

IncompleteSenten · 07/07/2023 21:38

No. I'm not confident. No chance would I ever wear a bikini. It's probably illegal for me to wear one tbh. Last thing the beach needs is to be full of people throwing up.

This is really sad that you feel this way about yourself.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 08/07/2023 19:05

And yes, size 16, big tummy, huge boobs. Nice bra sized bikini from Fantasie with fold or high waisted brief. Matching lovely floaty kaftan or sarong.

Annaisatwat · 08/07/2023 19:05

And no, I wouldn’t have worn a bikini when I was a 22. I also wouldn’t have worn one when I was a size 8 though, I would feel too exposed. Which I know is ridiculous because seeing as it’s only a bit more fabric covering your middle in a swimming costume.

Timeturnerplease · 08/07/2023 19:17

Size 16-18 here. Very very short, a lot fatter since having second child two years ago. Broad shoulders, no waist even when thin and rugby player thighs from years of horse riding as a child. Face like a Disney witch and wild hair. Only bonus is my colouring, which you would think I would love to show off in swimwear but I actually think it might be against public decency for me to wear a bikini. So absolutely no chance.

However, a lovely lady at work is a size 24 and absolutely rocks a bikini. She’s got a brilliant figure and an attractive face. I think it’s down to shape rather than size.
