Should eastenders call it a day?

Was a fan since childhood, in my thirties now. Stopped watching it properly 2 years ago and since then have never really had the urge or curiosity to sit down and watch a recent episode. I do read things about it online but that's about it. It just seems to be woke and rehashing old or dead characters and storylines that have been done to death in other soaps, not to mention £83m on a new set I mean wth! EE was the only soap I watched, the other ones seem just as abysmal.

What are your thoughts? Do you still watch it? What irks you about eastenders or any soap in general?

I have never watched it so can't say if it is past it's sell by date.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2023 17:37

I think it's still OK. If you don't like it, stop watching like you have done.

DadOnIce · 07/07/2023 17:37

You're probably right that it's past its best, but the BBC would then ask what they can replace it with that's equally cheap to make and gives them 200+ half-hours of TV a year. Not easy.

Well there is a possibility of things they could fill it up with but then again I don't work at the BBC nor in television, so perhaps your right.

I stopped watching it 2 years ago as well but caught up and have now been watching it again for about a year and I have to say it’s the best it’s been in years so yabu to say it should be dropped. If you don’t watch it then how do you know whether it’s good or not?

Sunnysal · 07/07/2023 17:56

I'm not and never have been a soap fan, but my dh of 20 years watches the big 3. We both watch corrie and emmers although I usually read. I won't watch enders. All the soaps are getting silly with ridiculous story lines. There are murders, affairs and accidents every week. I think the time has come for them all to go.

sashagabadon · 07/07/2023 17:57

Cindy Beale is back on it. I was trying to explain her back story to my dd and her connection to Ian. It sounded bonkers!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/07/2023 17:58

I just think people don’t really watch soaps anymore. Our lives are fairly miserable these days and watching something miserable is not what people want to watch. I also think Netflix et al have taken over channel wise with interesting documentaries and various films and series’.

crossstitchingnana · 07/07/2023 17:59

Used to watch it in the 80s and 90s. Can't believe I did now as it's rubbish. Think I come on MN instead now for my dramas.

creativebutterfly · 07/07/2023 18:01

Read somewhere that EE is barely managing to scrape in viewings of at least 1 mil per episode. I'm not surprised. I read in magazines the scoop on the top soaps and what's happening and I just realise I'm not missing much. Used to be an avid fan of EE but the casting and writing has gone down hill even before I stopped watching it.

I am a big fan but mostly of the threads on mumsnet as we have our own little gang over there ( but everyone is welcome )
I agree that the some of the storylines are far fetched and bringing Cindy back is madness , but it's still entertaining and funny ( sometimes ) and the majority of the actors are very good.
I would miss it if it was axed, but I would get over it.
I don't watch any other soaps, so no idea what they are like

I kind of love this. I like the fact there are characters (and actors) that have been in our lives for 20, 30 years.

I stopped watching eastenders and Corrie about 10 years ago as I just didn't have time.

Would gladly get into it again if I had the time (which sadly I don't).

Apart from the fact I enjoyed it and the storylines, I also loved chatting about it with people the next day; family, work colleagues etc.

Nobody watches live tv anymore (and I include myself in that) so there's not really the same buzz about watching something live then discussing it.

TeensToday · 07/07/2023 18:04

I watch it and like it.
I do think the Cindy Beale being alive is a bit of a daft storyline, but on the whole I think it’s as good as it’s ever been.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 07/07/2023 18:05

I used to watch it all of the time and had done from the beginning, would catch up on iplayer if I missed an episode. Then about 4 years ago I just got fed up with it. The storyline were just dull and so repetitive and just bleak. No happiness at all. Haven't missed it since.

KezzabellaB · 07/07/2023 18:06

I enjoy it. It's the only soap I watch. Can't be doing with all these old characters coming back in though. Yawwwwn!!!

JewelBlueSea · 07/07/2023 18:09

I think the quality of soaps declined in line with the increased weekly output of episodes. I haven't watched them for years now.

Wendysfriend · 07/07/2023 18:09

I've watched it since day one and still love it.

I will admit some storylines can be ridiculous and some characters annoy me but I still enjoy it.

The thing is with soaps, there's only so many storylines you can come up with, it must be very difficult trying to come up with something different and new and to find good characters.

People often rave about the classics in soaps, but we have to remember that when they all started out, everything was new, all the storylines were a first, writers could do anything with a character, as the years have gone by the characters have grown and personalities and history are formed, it takes more work as writers have to look back to ensure the continuation is right.

When I watch some of the classics I actually think, they weren't that brilliant, they were good for it's time, EE classic is just all shouting, everyone sleeping with each other etc there was also a lot more families, many more characters to work with and only on 2 days a week to begin with, now there's less families, and on 4 days a week, so storylines will end up repeated and sometimes the fillers are bad.

I do think that when they make a mistake getting rid of a character, they really need to find out if they're doing the right thing, they always seem to get rid of popular characters, probably to get ratings, but that only lasts a few weeks, then they're gone and they're left with no popular character so people tune out.

MrsRandom123 · 07/07/2023 18:11

I’m 38 & have watched eastenders and coronation st for over 20 years like my mum - they are the only 2 soaps i watched but got dire during lockdown although i found eastenders more realistic - Corrie was terrible and i stopped watching that about a year ago & haven’t missed it. Still going with Eastenders but i agree some of the storylines (bringing Cindy back) aren’t great

RudsyFarmer · 07/07/2023 18:13

I couldn’t watch any soaps once I had kids because I couldn’t deal with the constant abortions, miscarriages, still births and general abuse against kids being everyday viewing for someone’s? pleasure.

Lagershandy · 07/07/2023 18:13

Stopped watching it when Tiffany died!

RichardsGear · 07/07/2023 18:15

The last time I watched EE Joe Wicks was lining his bedroom with tin foil; I gave up on Corrie around the time John Stape went murderous and on Emmerdale when Matthew King died. Life's too short to watch shit TV.

Mrsjayy · 07/07/2023 18:16

Well considering Dot Cotton was an out and out bigot when it started a bit of "woke" is fine. I've watched it from the start and it peaks and troughs but I don't see why it's had its day ?

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2023 18:27

We don't tend to go out that much , so it's just a few hours a week of entertainment and much cheaper than the pictures or a theatre trip.
I agree it can be gloomy , but is what it is!
I don't know what else bbc would put on instead if it was axed.
Probably just some old films I suppose.

JohnnyYenSetHimselfOnFireAgain · 07/07/2023 18:59

Is it still the most miserable, depressing programme on telly?

Mrsjayy · 07/07/2023 19:00

Oh absolutely miserable as sin
