Anyone else live in a rough area and dreading the summer holidays?

I live on a council estate known to be very rough, plenty of lovely neighbours but several who are very antisocial and make living here stressful and miserable.

The school holidays are fast approaching and they’re going to be out there 24/7 causing mess and trouble and damage and constantly screaming at each other over who slept with who’s boyfriend and who owes who money for drugs and all the other usual dramas. I get dirty looks and sometimes nasty comments whenever I leave the house to go out because I once dared to politely ask one of them if their children could stop damaging my garden ornaments.

There’s not a lot I can do besides wait it out, I just wanted to see if there were others in my position because I feel quite isolated. Anyone else filled with dread about the school holidays?

Yup.

I live across the road from a huge estate, on a main road. It’s bad enough usually, but worse when the children are off school and wandering around bored.

The whole town I live in is a dump to be fair but that estate is the worst of it by far.

I know what you mean - when I walk dd to school I am often treated to the hanging out of windows, screaming about someone sleeping with someone else’s boyfriend.

@Ibloodymissgluten it’s so stressful isn’t it, you just never know what kind of trouble they’re going to cause and they always seem to be in large groups. It’s really a shame because most people round here just want to get on with their lives in peace but everything just gets destroyed.

Unfortunately, I live across the road from the local shop as well, so it’s really bad sometimes with people hanging around causing trouble.

It’s really stressful. It was the only place we could afford though. I didn’t think it would be as bad as it is.

Yeah it sucks. The police helicopter is always out. The local kids playground on a sunny day just gets overrun with parents smoking weed and drinking inside the playground, litter everywhere, and then we have a neighbour whose kids only seem to exist in the summer. As soon as daylight savings happens, five of the loudest little buggers you've ever heard appear in the garden until at least 1am every night screaming obscenities and lighting fires.

Every time I think about relocating out to a smaller town or village, i check the local fb groups and the level of busybodying is out of control. At least everyone largely minds their business here.

Sounds exactly like where I live! It’s so sad as our local park is beautiful, but I can’t take my children there as it’s full of parents sat smoking weed or letting their huge dogs fight and run riot.

I live on a ‘council estate’ and we do have the odd rough family that causes chaos. The other night we had a week of drunken parties with them hanging out their flat window, then was woken at 4am to one women Screaming at the police in the street getting arrested banging garage doors and all sorts.
I know it’s tough but don’t be afraid to report things. Report to social services, police the council. All the behaviours you mentioned are not only in breach of their tenancies but the law too.

SadKendall · 07/07/2023 15:36

We live opposite a kids park that's been commandeered by the local thuggy teens for drug and fist fighting action, it's a nightmare.

Obviously people can't take their kids there anymore to play, it's full of broken glass and bog shit. I dread summer evenings. I called the police multiple times last year late at night over people getting beaten up/doing moped doughnuts around the climbing frame.

I don't like to walk down my own road at night.

That sounds awful! Thankfully there’s no park within walking distance near me as I could imagine my DC pestering to go all the time and feeling disappointed when told no.

The busybodying here is horrendous though, I hear them gossiping when my windows are open and they get fixated on the oddest things, from the family at number 3 can afford that fancy new car, how dare the guy at number 19 put CCTV up he probably just wants to perv on their kids, where people they don’t even know are sending their kids to school and who’s pregnant.

It makes you feel so on edge that they’re watching your every move, hoping to find something to gossip about.

The park issue sounds truly awful, I know of many run down parks full of glass and thuggish gangs but I’ve never thought about the people living in the houses facing them. I’m so sorry for those of you that do x

Urgh you got the worst of both worlds! I am on the fb group of the village I grew up in and the best one I ever saw was 'Someone posted their motorbike too close to the war memorial, how disrespectful!' and everyone was raging about it trying to find the offender!
Here we have teens riproaring around the area on unplated motorbikes.

Same here. The gangs of brats (age between 6 and 14) have already started booting front doors and banging on windows as they run past people's houses.
Hanging around in the road on their bikes so drivers have to pull over - then giving said drivers a load of verbal when they dare to ask them to move.
Effing and blinding to random passers by, who are minding their own business.
It seems to get worse every year. And yes, parents have been informed, as have police (by myself and others). Parents don't care - and one look at them tells you why. Police give warnings but it still carries on.

Well I live in a fairly nice area. But across the road, down a small drop is a Beck. All I have all summer is screaming and shouting. The kids have to cross our land to get to it, which I don't mind, but I can do without the racket all day. And when I say screaming and shouting I mean just that. Full volume all day, swearing and arguing too, a neighbour did ask them to dial it down a bit but it's just not worth the abuse you get.

Kerri44 · 09/07/2023 10:32

I manage 250 council properties....my work load will treble and unfortunately people think that anti social behaviour is easy to solve and you can just kick people out when reality is it's a judge who makes that decision and the council takes forward to evidence provided by the tenants

Isthisasgoodasitis · 10/07/2023 09:07
