I am fuming, and have to vent: drivers who hoot from behind.

I'd dumped a friend for a train and set off home. The station road had several cars queuing to join the main road, which was stationary at a roundabout. Gradually they moved, and the cars ahead of me joined the stream to the left. I was a going right. When I got to the head of the queue there were two cars stopped across most of the roundabout, leaving room for a car, but on the left. One of them was holding on the clutch, and kept moving to and fro. I felt it sensible to wait until he went. The car behind hooted, but I took no notice. Thyey queue moved on and was replaced by a continuous flow from the right, with no gaps to use. Hoot again. Then they thinned out, but not, in my opinion, enough.
Double hoot. I was just about to get out and clarify the highway code as to who gets to choose when to move when she pulled into the left lane, passed me, and took off at speed. Blonde, driving an SUV. Not what I expected. I gave her a long blast as she went, and caught up the other side of the town at the traffic lights on to the M25.
Why do people who can't see the traffic situation attempt to impose their will on those who can, and whose insurance would say "You were joining a stream of traffic, it's your fault."
And then on a lane I had a big car on my tail, with no room to avoid the cars we met. He knew the road, as he went up a drive, thankfully, but why must they push at the car in front.
It only makes me drive slower.

It’s well known that hooting your horn improves the confit and decisiveness of the driver in front, especially if they appear hesitant or are learners. Also veering around people and screeching off in a cloud of angry petulance has also been shown to be extremely safe and also effective at allowing you to arrive at the next traffic lights 4 seconds before the person you were hooting at.
That is why.
HTH!

Confit=confidence

(but also might improve the confit, darling)

SirChenjins · 10/07/2023 13:08

A learner driver is learning to be a confident driver.

A hesitant driver who gets peeped at regularly and hasn’t worked out that the waiting space outside a supermarket isn’t a parking space either needs some additional driving lessons or to get off the road.

HTH.

I remember my dad saying he'd had this in his lorry.

Eventually, in exasperation, he got out and offered his keys to the impatient driver behind:
"Tell you what - you try and get my lorry out of that junction, and I'll sit here and play with your horn!"

Waiting zone is for waiting and not leaving your vehicle. If your just popping in for a minute your're parking. Go park in a space.

I get beeped at quite a lot, because I have the temerity to be doing 20 in a 20 limit, wait until it's safe to pass a cyclist, or because I don't burn rubber the millisecond the light turns amber...

SirChenjins · 10/07/2023 18:09

How odd - I do these things too and don’t have this at all.

There's a lot of bad drivers out there. You go when you can see it is clear. Tough shit if the person behind thinks you are faffing.

SirChenjins · 10/07/2023 18:34

And tough shit if the person behind you decides to go round you if they feel you’re faffing 🤷‍♀️ Bad drivers come in all shapes and sizes.

I do all of that and can’t remember the last time I was beeped.

I was hooted this morning at a roundabout where there were cars coming from the right. Twat.

I also hooted someone today who was being overly hesitant and it was dangerous as they ended up moving into my lane on the motorway as they were too scared to overtake. I hooted them because they swerved into my lane where there was not enough of a gap and then slowed right down 🙄

I think it depends on the circumstances

There are too many boy (and girl) racers round here. They often come up to the coast and race around.
