How can I just be left like this? Gallbladder

Sorry Mumsnet this is the second thread I’ve started today but I’m literally sobbing right now and I need to vent.

Back in march I had cholecystitis. I was treated as an outpatient and it took three rounds of antibs to shift it. I was horrendously ill. I was told by two doctors and a surgeon (!) that I was ‘priority 3’ and should have surgery as a priority and it was likely to happen again. They gave me a timeline of 6-8 weeks.

Well since that infection I cannot eat. I’m living off fruit and rice. I’m losing weight rapidly. I keep getting ill as I assume I’m not getting enough nutrients or because my system is unbalanced. I have discomfort everyday and quite often pain. Severe pain.

8 weeks come and gone it’s been 14 weeks now. I phone hospital surgery dept. They said i’m on a standard list and theres no priority whatsoever. It could be another two months OR MORE til I have surgery. The lady advised tell your gp and they can write a letter. I spoke to gp yesterday he said he will send a letter. Anyway don’t know what he did but gp surgery called and said the surgery department said sorry no priority for you basically.

How can they leave me like this? Am I meant to just starve slowly to death? What if I get another infection and my gallbladder ruptures? I have to wait months more in pain?

I cant live like this anymore

I had a blocked bile duct, which caused jaundice and pancreatitis (two separate occasions). Both times I was admitted and treated in hospital. Neither time resulted in being any closer to surgery.

I took a loan out and went private. It cost £7.5k two years ago. Best money I've ever spent!

Can you contact PALS at the hospital and explain what the surgeon told you?

I know a family member had this and they said they only relief they got was using a decent brand of ox bile liver salts. I believe it's also called tundac? It helped with the symptoms and they have been taking it religiously since having their gall bladder removed and swear by it.

Pleased for you OP!!

I was in the same position as you….back and forth to the drs in excruciating pain. Hospital appointment after hospital appointment and at the bottom of a very long list.
One night the pain was so bad my DH called an ambulance (he couldn’t take me because he’d taken his sleeping tablets) and I was admitted and spent 2 weeks in hospital NBM waiting to have my gallbladder removed. Unfortunately there were junior dr strikes while I was there so my surgery kept getting pushed back.
It was awful waiting so long but eventually the care I received was wonderful.
I hope you’re seen soon OP 💐

Take it, even if you have to reschedule something really important, take it!

I had mine out a couple of years ago and it was the best thing ever. Immediate relief, the pain from the surgery is different, you know it will get better and it fades quick. Nothing at all like the never ending agony of a gallstone attack.

Yes it’s on Monday and I’m absolutely terrified. I hope the bloods come back okay I’ve been feeling so run down lately 🤞🏻

@Applesinmyhouse So glad you got the cancellation, I was just coming on to post to tell you to let them know you would be available for one.

I went through exactly the same as you back in 2017, multiple admissions, NBM for weeks on end, then only tiny amounts of bland, fat free food. Hospital had no fat free food available so, in one memorable 10 day in-patient stay, all I got to eat was jellies my dh brought in from the hospital M&S! I was taken in by ambulance twice, once on blue-lights, as my electrolytes were dangerously deranged and blood sugar through the floor (I have another condition that makes managing these things difficult at the best of times) .

Please don’t be terrified. I had never had surgery before and like you was so scared, but honestly it was the best thing ever. The anaesthetist put me at east the second I arrived at theatre, we had a lovely chat about our children, then I woke up and it was all over. No more pain! I even managed to get to my dd’s sports day for half an hour a couple of days later. You do get tired easily after the op though, so make sure someone is around to take up the slack and look after you.

Good luck with it all. x

Good luck with the surgery. It's a very routine op and usually goes smoothly. I was sore for a few days, but was fine within a week.
