Is there any point approaching dr about dd’s bad skin?

She’s 12

terrible spots / blackheads. She’s got a few scars already although she doesn’t squeeze / pick

we've tried lots of different skin care things. Nothing seems to have an effect

it gets her down.

our surgery is massively overwhelmed, difficult to get an appointment. Still only doing phone calls initially. Wholly dismissive of most things unless your head is hanging off, I’ve got psoriasis, as an example, and they could not be less interested But poor dd 😢

I took low dose tetracyclines from about the age of 11 and they really worked. Took them until I was 19 and started taking the pill.

I went to the GP aged about 16, after suffering with moderate acne since about 12 (coated myself in orange foundation to try to hide chin/cheeks covered in sore pustules, and hated myself). Tetracycline sorted it almost completely in a few months. I remember telling Drs for other things I was taking medication for acne, and they didn't believe me as it worked so well. Don't let your DD suffer when there are good treatments available.

Definitely worth it - the doctor could prescribe something that works, but if not, she’ll have a medical history of skin issues which will he beneficial if the issues are long-standing

Yes get the GP to prescribe Lymecycline which is good for acne alongside topical benzoyl peroxide

Give it up to 3 months to clear if it's not starting to clear at 2 months then they'll get you wait till 3 then try something else

Maybe the pill later on around 14 if it won't budge

My DD skin was getting worse and then after getting the above it cleared within 3 months

Don't use overly harsh products

Just wash skin daily with Cerave SA or Dermalogica clear skin with a clean flannel.

This is exactly what my DD had, mainly on the forehead, and was prescribed Acnecide (Benzoyl peroxide) alongside lymecycline

DD is now on the pill which is keeping her skin clear

The acne was hormonal, due to periods etc etc

HappiDaze · 06/07/2023 22:51

Changing diet or using certain face washes etc etc won't really make much difference. A bit but the medication will shift it

it’s always better trying to clean up the diet first. It does make a HUGE difference.

For context, DD had tried Salicylic acid (clean and clear, nip and fab) etc and we asked the pharmacist what they suggested next. They said Acnecide. It’s benzoyl peroxide and has totally cleared her skin. It does bleach fabric though, so be careful. It made a slight difference in two days and then after three weeks her skin was clear. She had to use it just once a day to get used to it and and then moved on to twice a day.

I’ll attach a photo of the before. The after is 100% clear.

Acnicide will definitely work on skin like that, you can get it in boots, there’s a wash and a cream

I would, definitely. Acne had a huge impact on my mental health in my teens and I wish my mum had taken it more seriously. In the interim, though, I can recommend this stuff, which has had a huge impact on my 16-year-old's skin in a matter of weeks. He uses Body Shop tea tree face wash and then a quick spray of this twice a day and it's almost completely cleared his skin.
