Todays teacher strike

Dd is in year 7. School have said that all children can be accommodated during strikes this week as year 11 & 13 are off so obviously I've sent her in. Shes messaging me saying they are just in the hall watching blue planet.
I do sympathise with the teachers & totally support them.
I'm lucky with my work that I wfh & can be around so I'm tempted next time just to keep her home. I don't see the point in making her go in to watch tv.
Next strike is fri & im off anyway (as is youngest DD due to strikes)
Would anyone else keep their child off in this situation?

I think school should've made it clear that it was for childcare not learning. I would think very poorly of a teacher that undermined another teacher's efforts by teaching their class during a strike. Indeed the unions advise against it.

I don't see the point in making her go in to watch tv.

But if her maths teacher isn't on strike then she would be e.g. in a maths lesson, not watching TV.

The school wouldn't know until the day of the strike which teachers will be in and teaching and which lessons would be spent watching Blue Planet.

It's tricky isn't it. I'll ask other parents for feedback from their children to try to be more informed.

I would ask the school if I could keep at home with their permission, but if not I would send in.

@frozendaisy I know they won't give permission. When she had a stomach bug there was no expected exclusion time. They just want bums on seats.

'And totally support them'

Teachers if in a non striking union cannot cover striking teacher. So school will have opened for childcare purposes.

YABU

It would be helpful is NASWUT stood up and took action as their members will benefit from NEU action but that's a whole oftener story.

If the strike is called by a sufficiently large union the schools usually close. If there are smaller unions striking on different days a head teacher might ask a non striking teacher to take the class. This is extremely bad form on the HT part and contravenes union ethics but has happened. If support staff are supervising children then they are not being 'taught'. I would send my kids in if I supported the strike as it would cause problems for the employer, having to provide supervision and show support for teachers.

@PTSDBarbiegirl yes that was what I was wondering too
