Has anyone had their ceiling soundproofed against noisy neighbours?

I have just moved into a housing association flat and the sound proofing is terrible! We visited the flat several times before formally accepting it and was always quiet, however since moving in it has been constant noise and a lot of it is during the night and wakes us up.

A lot of it is just 'living' noises like walking or running, TV, etc so not complaint-worthy. But we definitely need some type of sound proofing put in as when they walk it is like the ceiling is going to come down at us.

I am aware it is a lot of money but I am willing to do it for oeace of mind. We waited 8 years to get this flat adter private renting and like it otherwise so dont want to move.
Is ceiling soundproofing effective?

well the trouble is that the best way to do it is between the floorboards and the ceiling, which would mean ripping down the plaster and putting up insulation and replastering.

I am not sure how effective anything else would be

Hi @Frazzledmummy123

I saw your message about installing soundproofing because of noisy neighbours and I'm in a very similar situation. I was wondering if you did get any advice and can share any tips.

We soundproofed a terraced house before. On one side where the noisy neighbours were. It was so worth it and and we stayed there happily for 8 years before moving to a detached house.

I would get this moved over to property/DIY. You are likely to get a few good responses but some telling you the noise runs through the floorboards and didn't get any better.

You have to insulate down between the joists a bit to deaden any sound before it can hit them. We sacrificed a chimney too which was a shame. But worth it for the absolute peace and quiet.

Agree about getting the topic moved but I see it's a bit of an old thread now anyway.
