My ex boyfriend used to live with me.
He hasn't and we haven't together for two years.
We are still good friends
I received a letter today from marston recovery (balliff ) who have came to collect his debt.
I have a council tax bill to prove he doesn't live here.
What do I do ? Get him to ring up and sort a payment plan or simply tell them he doesn't live here ?
I'm obviously terrified

It is not your debt, unless you went guarantor. They cannot do anything to you if you personally haven't any debt with their clients.

Did you contact them to say BF was gone two years now and no longer at your address. Have you checked that he is not using your address any longer? Are you prepared to tell bailiffs where he is living now?

Try and calm down. You say you and BF are still friends, why haven't you told him about the bailiffs yet?

Why are you terrified? It’s not your debt.

Show them the council tax bill, give them his new address or they’ll keep asking. I bought a house and had to get quite arsey the bailiffs who were after the previous owner’s boyfriend. Pita.

I had debt collectors at my door for the previous owners. It was really simple to sort out. Copy of council tax letter plus photo ID to prove I wasn’t the named debtor.

If they show up show them the council tax bill and whatever you need to show he doesn’t live there. Don’t open the door to them.
If they refuse to leave then call the police.
I’ve had this for a former tenant where I was renting who didn’t pay their parking fines.
The council sent bailiffs who wouldn’t leave after I told them the person was no longer at this address. They didn’t care. I had to call the police. I held up my rental agreement and council tax bill at the window and they made the bailiffs leave.
It was very scary and stressful but it was OK in the end.

I take it the letter was addressed to him?

What did they say when you called to say that he doesn’t live there?

Yes it was but it said urgent so I opened it
I tried ringing but no answer
I have all my bills in my name

We had baliffs put a letter (without envelope) through our door for a previous tenant (I assume!) who owed £24000!! I just rang them up and they asked for proof of our occupancy (council tax letter) and all sorted.

I had bailiff letters for the previous owner of my house. I sent a few back with ‘no longer at this address’ and then opened a few and rang the number.
They surprisingly just took my word over the phone.
