Urine dip test - high specific gravity

Hi, wondering if anyone has been through similar or has any advice…

my DS (4) has always been a big drinker tho it’s ramped up recently. It’s been warm though, so could be that. He’s also recently had an insatiable appetite. Will just be finished one thing for example, and asking for the next.

I started to get concerned about diabetes but I have a history of health anxiety and sometimes worry my judgement is off.

I get some urine dip tests and tested his urine. The results showed negative for glucose but 1.030+ for specific gravity. Hadn’t ever heard if it. Google suggests dehydration but the boy drinks for Scotland.

anyone any experience?

I seem to remember the description of what specific gravity means being really confusing on the Sigma dipstick tests - what do your instructions say? I also found some of the sections quite difficult to read.

They say a one off high or low isn’t a concern. A low can indicate over hydration and a high can indicate dehydration. Both can indicate kidney problems and high can indicate hear problems. It’s the low hydration confusing me given how much I know he drinks

Oh, I'm just looking at the instructions for mine (Siemens not Sigma), and they don't say much - just that a normal specific gravity indicates that the concentration ability of the kidneys is normal. They do mention that the presence of moderate quantities of protein can cause elevated readings.

Try not to worry too much in the meantime - will you try to get a GP appointment? The normal glucose reading sounds reassuring re the possibility of diabetes.
