Getting a mirena coil tomorrow

Philosopherstone · 03/07/2023 18:30

As the title says im getting the mirena coil put in tomorrow and im terrified for the actual fitting but also the side effects it can cause. I've had 3 children and do not want anymore so feel I've no other choice really.

Anyone care to share any recent experiences.

I got one 8 weeks ago. The worst part was getting the smear before it because I have an issue with my cervix. The actual coil insertion was fine. I did bleed quite a bit after but could of been my cervix. I've basically had spotting non stop the last 8 weeks and had some heavy cramping day two to five after insertion. Just biding my time for the bleeding to stop.

Philosopherstone · 03/07/2023 20:49

You have all reassured me I need to stay off Google. I was told as pp above advised my GP applied some sort of numbing cream to I guess the cervix and the entrance to the cervix (not quite sure) also not sure how much it helps. I had my smear done last month and I don't find them painful.

I think the other forms of contraception just don't agree with me and also I would forget pills. I don't want a hysterectomy because I want to keep my options open just incase never say never. Hence why Dh isn't getting a vasectomy. I just need to be safe now because I've had two really close together by accident.

The GP who booked it didn't explain anything really because I had request the coil so she must have assumed I knew all about it, I guess the GP who does it tomorrow will discuss beforehand.

I will let yous know how I get on.

I am glad you feel reassured, OP. If you aren’t sure that your family is complete then Mirena could well be a good choice. Just to give you some more info, however, for your options in the future: female sterilisation is not a hysterectomy. No part of your uterus needs to be removed. It is done by blocking the fallopian tubes, usually with clips or rings and sometimes by cutting them.

So glad you put up this thread OP. I am having one fitted later this week as part of my HRT regime.
I’m hoping for some sort of anaesthetic cream and will definitely ask before the clinician gets started.
I’m having it done at my GP surgery but husband will be driving me there and home again just in case I feel ropey.

bobblyjob · 03/07/2023 21:17

I have had 3. The one with no numbing cream was noticeably more unpleasant! If you have had kids it will be way better- I haven’t though and I am still planning to go back. It’s uncomfortable but not awful.
The worst part for me is that I get VERY vagal, nausea and have to lie down for about 15 minutes after! That was also worse without the numbing cream though.
It is totally worth it for me. No periods for over a decade, feel fine and love knowing I have reliable contraception with no thought required from me

theculture · 03/07/2023 21:23

I had two kids through c section and it was fine, solved my very heavy periods and I wish I had done it years ago!

Wore my cosy cardigan, had some paracetamol before and the gynaecologist (was out of the Uk) heated up a warm cushion thing to put in my tummy which she said would help keep my uterus relaxed

snoozingbaby1476 · 03/07/2023 21:43

I've had mine 12 months. Bloody love it! My weight seems steadier & I can lose weight a bit easier. Also my periods stopped straight away
However....I did find it a weird sensation to have it fitted. Going in through the cervix didn't hurt but when the arms of the coil go down in to place it was pinchy in my uterus and I wasn't prepared for that. Left me feeling a bit vulnerable for a day in a weird way. I had a bit of spotting.
My moods are okay overall but I do think I have a time of the month that I'm a bit grumpy.
I'm glad I had it done though. Been a game changer for me.

Philosopherstone · 04/07/2023 12:56

My moods aren't great anyways with PMT so hopefully not worse for me.

My appointment is in a few hours so going to just go for it.

I'm on the waiting list too. Keep us posted. I'm scared of this too. Doesn't help that I'm on a fb about it and it's all negative. I'd like one for my heavy periods and hrt

Philosopherstone · 04/07/2023 16:14

It's done

The GP didn't use any numbing cream so not sure why the other GP said that but it wasn't needed.

I only felt the mildest cramp when she put in the measuring probe and felt absolutely nothing when the coil itself went in and then it was done. Can't believe how worked up I got myself it was nothing at all for me.

I'll do more updates as it settles, I have some bleeding now but she said it was coming from my cervix being irritated but there was no pain or anything. I feel only the tiniest of period cramps but barely noticeable.

Well done op. I hope it works for you 🤞🤞

snoozingbaby1476 · 04/07/2023 16:42

Well done 👍
Take it easy for the rest of the day (if you can) fingers crossed it settles quickly

Coilfitterhere · 04/07/2023 17:11

That's good news 👍

clarepetal · 04/07/2023 17:13

Yay! What a relief for you

libertybonds · 04/07/2023 17:16

Nice! I had one inserted about 6 weeks ago. Have not stopped bleeding since.

Roselilly36 · 04/07/2023 17:26

So pleased it went smoothly for you, I purposely didn’t post, as Mirena insertion has been agony for me everytime, on my 3rd and final Mirena now, been great not having periods, that was the reason why I had the Mirena to begin with, as I was suffering with very heavy periods. Take it easy, but I am sure you will be fine Flowers

Harebrain · 04/07/2023 19:37

Yay great news. It does seem to be the luck of the draw as some people find it painless and others don’t.

Twospaniels · 06/07/2023 18:36

I had mine inserted today. The clinician was lovely. She did insert an anaesthetic gel, I don’t know if it made a difference or not.
It was very uncomfortable when she inserted the coil and when the arms opened. I had to catch my breath but I was fine almost immediately afterwards.
I was at the very end of a period and was spotting, and so after insertion this was the same and not more.
I’ll have to see how I go on with it. I am using it as part of my HRT regime and am hoping it will stop my bleeding as I am ‘old’ - too old to be still bleeding and most clinicians are amazed that I am when I tell them.

How are you getting on @Philosopherstone ?
For me 3.5 wks since the coil was inserted, I am still bleeding. I would rate it as spotting or light. It’s annoying but I have read this could go on for 3-6 months! I have some mild cramps almost every day too 😢

Philosopherstone · 31/07/2023 14:35

I'm the same @Twospaniels I had spotting every day since I got it, I'm currently on day 11 of my first period with it. My face has completely broken out on spots down to my neck aswell. Plus mood swings. I'm praying this doesn't last more than few months and settles.

Twospaniels · 31/07/2023 14:49

@Philosopherstone
I’m sorry to hear that
I feel quite low too and have no libido, partly because i don’t feel like it and partly because of still bleeding a bit
I guess we’ll have to wait out the 3 mths at least and hope the symptoms improve

Orangesandlemons24 · 31/07/2023 15:04

I had one fitted in early June and the bleeding lasted about 5-6 weeks. Was quite light and some days more like spotting. I'm really hoping that's it now and it settles down 🤞🏼
