Would you think these were women's shoes?

An older (65+), male turned up to an event wearing these. A few younger people were commenting to each other that they looked like women's shoes, and a family member of the man with aforementioned shoes overheard and insisted that no one in their right mind could possibly construe them as women's shoes and that they're clearly men's shoes.

Now I'm all for people wearing what they want, if Uncle Dave wants to wear stilettos and a mini skirt, that's his business, the same as I can wear trousers, a jacket and a tie if I want. Also, I appreciate that a lot of clothes are worn by either sex without anyone batting an eyelid (see hoodies). And that fashion changes and what's "acceptable" (for whatever that word is worth) does change.

But the question is... what would you actually think of these shoes on a man? I tend to agree with the younger folk, only because of the peep toe, which I've never seen on a man's shoe before. And in this context, I do think Uncle Dave would be embarrassed if he knew people thought he was wearing ladies shoes. Thoughts?

Would you think these were women's shoes?

Theyre advertised as women's on amazon...

GoodChat · 03/07/2023 18:46

I've seen quite a few men wearing them.

It sounds like lots of the attendees need to grow up if they're going to be so openly nasty to a man wearing comfortable shoes.

I never realised the women of MN were so sexist.

It's not sexist to be aware that some items of fashion are more associated with men than women and vice versa. That's not what sexism means.

But of course it's all culturally relative. Those sandals look like womanswear to most Brits, but look unisex if you're Spanish.

Men in the UK don't wear skirts to formal occasions ....unless they're Scottish.

I love that! And he looks great in them!

I don't think anyone should feel embarrassed about what they want to wear. But some people do, I think that's just human nature. And I think that's because there will be always people who judge, whether or not they should.

I’d be surprised to see a man wearing them in the UK, but not in Spain.

KirstenBlest · 03/07/2023 18:54

They're unisex. Mine cover the toes despite being open at the front.

doorstopper123 · 03/07/2023 18:55

"I actually think they were genuinely concerned he might be embarrassed or unaware"

Yeah right! 🤣

They were taking the piss. We know what teenagers are like

AnneKipankitoo · 03/07/2023 18:56

Unisex men

RaininSummer · 03/07/2023 18:56

They're not women's shoes, they are his shoes (paraphrasing Eddie izzard before he/'she' became an absolute fool).

AnneKipankitoo · 03/07/2023 18:57

Oops ! I did not mean to add men .

ReleasetheCrackHen · 03/07/2023 18:58

They’re unisex. You see shoes like that everywhere on men in the Middle East.

Why should HE be embarrassed that other people think shoes are sexed or that men should not wear certain styles of shoe !

Because he’s wearing an effeminate shoe. But if the shoe fits.

isthismylifenow · 03/07/2023 18:59

Yes, lots of men here wear this type of shoe.

In a hot country, men are not restricted to only wearing closed shoes, Merrell type or thong sandals.

Thighdentitycrisis · 03/07/2023 19:00

I think these are the traditional shoes in the Balearics and are unisex. They are typically worn as women’s shoes here

Amazon UK I assume ?

Those shoes are women’s shoes.
I’ll wager those shoes have never been worn on the deck of a tea clipper.
😉😁😁😁

They're just unisex sandals. Just like the old sandals we wore, just like birkenstocks. Then brogues, loafers, chelsea boots - all worn by men and women.

The people commenting sound like backwater dickheads.

MrsCarson · 03/07/2023 19:09

Used by everyone in Spain, men women and children.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/07/2023 19:10

YallaYallaaa · 03/07/2023 18:14

Mostly worn by women, but I can deff see them on an older/ arty/ posh bohemian chap.

I agree. I think they're fine.

PerkingFaintly · 03/07/2023 19:12

Ooh, thank you everyone. I have Seasalt sandals exactly like the first pic, and have been wondering where I can get a wider variety.

My question is answered!

ASGIRC · 03/07/2023 19:19

Definitely unisex.
Id compare them to Toms. Would you say theyre womens shoes? I know plenty of men in the UK who wear them.

Anyway, the gentlemen was not wearing womens shoes.
