Please recommend a school that takes children with a DLD diagnosis…

What’s DLD? You might need to say what it is to get advice.

Maybe move this to the SEN board. You might get people with more specific knowledge.

Huh?

Need a bit more information to be able to help you.

What age is your child

What are main features of your child's DLD.

Do they have an EHCP, is one being planned.

What level of support do they currently need.

Are you looking for specialist setting or mainstream with additional support.

Elisheva · 03/07/2023 18:26

Meath School and Moorhouse are the ones I know. There aren’t many, you might be better looking for a language unit in a mainstream.

Littlefish · 03/07/2023 18:26

Private or state?

GameOverBoys · 03/07/2023 18:27

All schools would accept a child with DLD
as a stand alone diagnosis with no other SEN I doubt specialist schools would be necessary or available to your child. The school will be able to get a SALT to come in and provide support.

Dianeros · 03/07/2023 18:40

@Elisheva will take a look

Elisheva · 22/07/2023 22:35

What support does she already have in place at school?

My son, 11, was diagnosed aged 3. There are lots of useful pages on Instagram and DLD 123 is a great video on YouTube which explains it well. I hope things aren't too hard for you; we had an awful time with our son at the beginning. X

Nothing at the minute, she’s got up to 6
months for speech and language get in touch. The school have been given some resources but it depends if the TA will have time to put that in place. I’m worried because I know she is going to struggle in year 2.

Moor House, Meath, Dawn House, St Mary’s or St Catherine’s? (I am not sure if St Catherine’s and St Mary’s still exist, whereas I know Moor House and Dawn House do.) DD went to Moor House and Dawn House with a primary diagnosis of DLD. She did have dyslexia and dyspraxia, but the major obstacle to her education was the profound DLD. Considering speech therapists said DD would only cope a term or two in mainstream at age four and she needed signing to support language, I am not sure how you can say a specialist school is not necessary for a child with DLD? The heads of therapy at Moor House, Dawn House and St Mary’s, who all assessed DD certainly thought she’d never cope in mainstream and there were no secondary language units in my LA!

Quisquam · 04/08/2023 09:43

BTW OP, I am not recommending the specialist speech and language schools for your DC coming up to Y2, unless you happen to live near one and they could take DC as a day pupil. It’s too young to board imo. As pp says, the best thing to do is try to find a language unit - although even if there are any, they are probably very oversubscribed? (Competition for places was 10:1 when my DD went to a language unit, and that was a long time ago)

Elisheva · 04/08/2023 15:29

The support should not just be something that a TA does. The school needs to look at everything, how lessons are accessed, differentiating input, how she is managing at breaks times, her literacy skills etc. This needs to be teacher led, not TA.
Did the SLT do a report on her needs?

justsayingthat · 04/08/2023 15:53

I work in education and recently had an update that Kent is no longer providing ANY specialist provision at all. All children will be enrolled at mainstream schools, regardless of nature or level of need.

I believe that children already attending special provisions will be able to stay, but these will be phased out over the next few academic years. No new pupils will be taken on.

If this goes ahead, it is a dire situation. It may also set a precedent for other counties to follow and become more standard practice nationwide.

Oh my goodness. That's awful. For so many children and families.
