Jet belly! Anyone found a cure?

I arrived on holiday this morning, now by the pool in my bikini. Very happy and lucky to be away I know but, as always when I fly, I look like I've put on 2 stone! Just been reading about jet belly. It's definitely a thing, stomach gases increase as cabin pressure decreases. Anyone else get it? Anyone found a cure?

I get this…had no idea that there was a name for it!!

Hellostrawberries · 03/07/2023 16:17

Neither did I, just tried looking up the symptoms. It makes sense. Your stomach does the same thing as a bag of crisps on a plane.

Can't say as I've noticed it, or just blamed any bloating on wine and crisps.

Drink lots of water, go for a swim, maybe do.a bit of restorative yoga? Lying on your back, hugging one knee towards your chest at a time. Child pose. And a great one for tired/swollen legs, lie down with your bum as close to the wall as possible and put your legs up the wall. Stay there for as long as is comfortable.

Ooh will try yoga poses! Thanks

I'm not sure now it's happened but on my last flight I made sure I drank absolutely shit loads of water and it didn't happen! Way tmi but I was farting all throughout the flight 😂 so I guess the gas was escaping instead of sitting in my stomach!

notimagain · 03/07/2023 16:33

Oh it's definitely exists, though goes under various names.

As an airliner climbs cabin the cabin pressure drops a little bit so yes, any gas trapped in your digestive system will expand, sometimes with interesting results ....it should contract again on the descent.

If you ever have the joys of talking to the aviation medics that teach this sort of stuff they''ll emphasise that's a good thing to do..

Trapped gas can end up being v painful. It's not usually a big problem on airliners but it can be on aircraft that aren't perhaps as well pressurised as those built to commercial passenger carrying standards.

Baggingarea · 03/07/2023 16:46

I used to think this was a thing but I do wonder if it's a combo of being warmer on hols and not drinking enough water while on a plane. Basically, drink way more water than you usually would.

chipsandpeas · 03/07/2023 16:57

debloating tablets helps me debloat after flying and usually farting all the way through it as well

AnotherCountryMummy · 03/07/2023 17:02

Get your bum in the air! Hot air rises... It's a great way to release gas 😅

Poses such as downward dog or just be on all fours then put your chest/shoulders towards the floor so your bum is the highest point. Sway, jiggle or move a bit until the gas is released!

PoseyFlump · 03/07/2023 17:17

Doesn't a good fart sort it out?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/07/2023 17:23

Aah yes I get this.I think the problem is only drinking alchohol on the flight and no water

No sadly it's longer term than that. Apparently it can last up to a week! I do seem to get it badly. But will try increasing water, and bum in the air yoga poses.

Sounds like there are two issues in play.

Bloating in flight, certainly in the early stages, is definitely down to gas and yes, a good fart should help sort that out.

Bloating for days after the flight - absolutely no idea.

uggmum · 03/07/2023 17:53

The minute I get on a flight I blow up. Everything swells up.

I now take water retention tablets just before my flight and a few days afterwards.

I find it helps. I also avoid carbonated drinks whilst on board

PoseyFlump · 06/07/2023 17:46

Do you think it could be down to drinking different water and food from what you're used to? I've never had it last any longer than collecting luggage. Come to think of it, those airports must be full of ripe air! Grin

MumUndone · 06/07/2023 17:59

Lots of water and don't eat too much stodgy stuff

No, definitely a reaction to flying. It was horrendous when we arrived, despite travelling since 4am and not eating for 12 hours. And fully recovered by day 3 despite eating and drinking more than usual.

Deflatine tablets should do the trick

MackenCheese · 07/07/2023 09:20

I choose a gluten free meal when I travel now, and its stopped happening (I'm not normally gluten free- just for flights)
