Car Prang

What happens if someone prangs your car (whilst you are stationary) and they accept fault etc etc so it will go through their insurance - how does it affect my insurance? and how do I get courtesy car for when it is being fixed as would her insurance company be dealing with it or mine?
also - she has offered to pay for the work outside of insurance - how does that work?

thanks

Your insurance company will deal with everything including courtesy car if you are entitled to one dependant on policy, you just need to report the incident.

If you deal with it without insurance, aka if they want to pay for costs themselves then that wouldn't be advised by your insurance and no courtesy car would be provided as this would be an informal agreement between yourselves.

If you go outside insurance - then it's up to the 2 of you to agree how. Last time it happened to me, he paid the garage of my choice directly in advance of the work being done. It was in for a couple of days so I scheduled for a 2-day period when I wouldn't need the car, rather than fanny about with a hire car.

The garage (main dealership) also offered a service whereby they sort out the insurance side, which is what I would've used had he not been on the ball with it...

If you go through her insurance, then they sort it; they will contact your insurers, who will take your excess but it will get refunded later. Her insurance company will organise a courtesy car.

Either way, you need to declare it to your insurer, and it's likely that your premium will go up next year; statistically, someone who makes a no-fault claim is likely to make an at-fault claim afterwards so you are more risky. That isn't guaranteed, it'll depend on how risky they deem you to start off with - but it's a possibility.

So even if we go through her insurance, I have to have the initial outlay of my excess? that seems harsh, and not sure how I will do that!

You’ll be able to claim your excess back if you are deemed not at fault

allofamuddle · 03/07/2023 15:25

But I have to find it initially?

Quite likely, but may depend on if the garage want the excess paid before starting work or on completion

Aggielera · 03/07/2023 15:32

When this happened to me we got 3 quotes and arranged for it to be done at the weekend. It wasn’t a big dent so only one day.

I told my insurers but my insurance didn’t go up, any more than expected as it never seems to go down now!

Were you in the car? Any CCTV?

DeerWithNoEye · 03/07/2023 15:37

If it’s definitely their fault you shouldn’t have to pay anything (as long as they are insured)
I had similar - car went into mine when I was parked. Luckily got their reg on dashczm (as they just drove off!) From that, my insurance company could see they were insured and they sorted my courtesy car & repairs then claimed against other persons insurance. I didn’t have to pay anything

mum11970 · 03/07/2023 15:43

If they admit liability and you go though their insurance you will have no excess to pay. I’d advise you to always go through their insurer as there may be unseen damage behind what is initially obvious, you will also be entitled to a like for like replacement vehicle until yours is fixed. There can sometimes be long delays on parts so not worth the risk

GrunkleStan · 03/07/2023 17:36

I had this situation a few years ago.

They admitted fault to their own insurer. Their insurer contacted me directly and said I could go via them with no need to involve my own insurer.

I agreed to do this and I had no need to pay anything out.

I did let my own insurer know what was going on.

I had full use of a courtesy car for the duration of the repair. there were no issues whatsoever.

Redglitter · 03/07/2023 17:40

If they're at fault do it through their Insurance. Having been the victim of a couple of road accidents in the past I've always gone via ins. My premium has never really been affected and if their insurance is paying you'll get a like for like courtesy car not a hairdryer on wheels from the garage

FixTheBone · 03/07/2023 17:55

Nobody mentioned that your premiums will go up next year.

Regardless of whether you were at fault, their stats will say you are more at risk of an accident.

I've had my car hit while parked outside my house, three times. Didn't have to pay an excess, got a courtesy car paid for by the other party, got a nice 15-20% surprise at renewal time each year.

allofamuddle · 03/07/2023 18:16

Thanks - I can't be doing with an increase in renewal - not with COL crisis - will let her pay for it and sort out the carless ness myself!

How much damage is there to your car? Have you had any quotes yet?

putthatdownsteve · 03/07/2023 20:32

Someone was reverse parking, I was waiting and suddenly, they veered out and backwards and slammed into the front of my car.

We swapped numbers and email addresses, I got a couple of quotes for my new bumper and they transferred me the money.

I didn’t want to go through insurance and I did without my car for a day while it was getting it fixed.

She was lovely though, absolutely mortified and dropped round a bottle of wine and a takeaway voucher as well.

putthatdownsteve · 03/07/2023 20:34

I drive a 15 year old banger with more dents in it than I can count though, so I am not precious about it 🤣

You’re bound by your T&Cs to inform them anyway regardless of whether you’re claiming or not. It’s always best to go through insurance, as a non fault claim the increase is likely to be minimal.
