Hi all I currently work term time as a finance officer for a school. Lots of responsibilities not a lot of pay and not a lot of scope for progression. My child is now of an age where they do not need me as often in school holidays/drop offs pick ups etc. I want to move on into something that I can progress in and move up the ladder. I am degree educated (business management) and would be happy to undertake any further qualifications. I’m desperate to find something new but need the starting salary to be in the region of £30k and would also love some wfh. My current job responsibilities include:
-processing invoices
-printing cheques
-processing payments
-chasing debts
-bank reconciliation
-credit card reconciliation
-budget monitoring
-budget setting
-presenting at governors meetings
-facilities management
-procurement
-ordering
-stock management
-front of house
-general office duties

can anyone think of any careers or sectors I could be searching as I’m a bit blind to what my skills can actually transfer into

Look at admin at a university. Lots of those skills covered. The pay band would be about right.

What about a bursar for a secondary school they are better paid

Come to the NHS! We are always recruiting finance staff - it’s a supportive environment & lots if opportunities to progress. Work is really varied and interesting, and as it’s public money there’s lots to report on.

Annual leave is 25 days so if you work PT, the school holidays aren’t too bad if you can save your holiday days until then. I used to be a school finance officer too & losing the summer break wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

I think I want to move on from term time so high school would still be that wouldn’t it? Interesting about the NHS I’ll have a look but the banding always seems to be way lower? Is there a certain job role I should be looking at

Civil service might be a good fit, plenty of opportunity to work from home, lots of admin/finance adjacent roles (but also the opportunity to branch out a bit). EO is a common starting grade and pays around 28k (varies a bit between department), HEO would be plausible with your experience and around 34k. If you filter by your location and those grades on civil service jobs you should see plenty pop up- don’t be put off by some of the obscure sounding areas, lots aren’t looking for direct experience but general competencies

It can take a few gos to get the hang of the “style” of applications, so it’s not unusual for people to take a few attempts to get their first role but then it gets a lot easier once your foot is in the door.

You could look at Paraplanning, which is support to a financial adviser. As your technical knowledge grows you can undertake a substantial part of the research/analysis and report writing, and it is now recognised as a profession in its own right. Many Paraplanners are self-employed which gives maximum flexibility for working hours.

Civil service or local government?

LubaLuca · 03/07/2023 18:16

The Financial Ombudsman Service are taking on remote investigators with a salary of £30k (outside London).

What about the Environment Agency? Grade 4 roles start at just under 30k, but there are opportunities for secondments or moving to other internal roles. Good pension, flexi time and for lots of roles you can be based anywhere, mainly working from home but contracted to your nearest office. Something like this?

More finance-type roles do come up as well from time to time so it's worth keeping an eye. Applications and interview are competency-based using STAR format (situation, task, action, result).

Board Governance Officer - 27012 - Environment Agency Jobs

Last summer I applied for a finance officer role in a school (academy) and also in a local gov position in a coordinator role in highways - was offered both and took the gov job, 29.5k bottom of band (grade 8) with scope to climb. The job is not too taxing, don't take it home and very flexible. Very similar skill set to yours, lots of your skills are transferrable - good luck with the search

Odiebay · 03/07/2023 18:22

You could go the accountancy route... Assistant accountancy or even finance assistant. Lots of opportunities to study aswell and increase your wage.

nomorelurking · 03/07/2023 18:26

How about a School Business Manager role

BettyOBarley · 03/07/2023 18:28

PA?

snaptrap · 03/07/2023 18:36

Have a look at private school jobs. I used to do the same school job as you, and now earn pretty much double in the private sector. IME teachers' pay is not that different between state and private, but support staff pay can be much higher. There are often also full time, full year contracts available. And your school experience will be really valued.

KenAdams · 03/07/2023 18:56

Where are you located?

bibbingo · 03/07/2023 19:03

Finance/cashier jobs in law firms, councils, unis etc maybe?

Needingachange · 03/07/2023 21:05

I’m greater Manchester based with good links to Manchester City centre. School business management would be my natural progression but the pay is really poor compared to private sector in a lot of school (education for you!)
