Just knocked out a front tooth - what can the dentist do tomorrow?

I’ve knocked out one of my front teeth. Whilst I’m not in too much pain, I work in a very public facing role. A lot of my job involves creating good first impression and I doubt I’ll be very popular with the company if I go in looking like a pirate. Can the dentist do anything aesthetic immediately tomorrow?

Do you have the tooth?
I think that the advice is to put it into a glass of milk and take it to the dentist with you

DentalDisaster · 02/07/2023 22:14

If they can’t save the tooth an immediate replacement is unlikely. I was without a tooth for 4 weeks waiting for a ew bridge.
I’m having an impression made for a new one at a private dentist in a couple of weeks, even though it’s costing £600 it’s still going to be 2 weeks for the lab to make it and send it back.

Are you okay? That’s a pretty hard wack to knock a tooth out. I would contact 111 and see if the urgent dentist deals with this rather than waiting until tomorrow.

Have you lost the whole tooth ( root and all) or have you just broken off some of the visible bit? If the latter they might be able to bond a temporary crown onto it while they wait for a new one.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 02/07/2023 22:20

Thanks for the responses so far.
@illiterato I’ve broken off the visible bit. There’s actually just a very tiny part of the tooth still showing. I think the tooth itself is beyond salvageable.
@DentalDisaster I love the name! I’m ok thanks, surprisingly it doesn’t hurt too badly. I’m in shock more than anything and scared about what work will say, and I can’t talk properly either!

Can you wear a covid type mask to hide your mouth while talking? Say you have a slight cold? (I've had to do this once, because of a front tooth repair)

Norachance · 02/07/2023 22:22

Can you wear a Covid mask and come up with an excuse?

That's for baby teeth generally

I had a dental plate recently after I had a tooth pulled out

They'll have to pull the root out then you'll have to wait 3 months till it heals for them to take a mould to make a denture

MossCow · 02/07/2023 22:35

I've got a broken front tooth. I've had impressions made and it takes two weeks to make the dental plate which will go in the gap. It hooks on to the teeth on either side apparently.

Then they put a screw into the hole and you have to wait three to six months for it to embed itself into the bone.

Then a artificial tooth gets attached to the screw.

MossCow · 02/07/2023 22:35

Mine is costing £2800

HappiDaze · 02/07/2023 22:36

There is dental glue you can actually buy from a pharmacist to temporarily stick the tooth back on till you see the dentist and or get it sorted out

titchy · 02/07/2023 22:39

Your dentist should be able to make a temporary composite one straight away till a replacement has been made. Prepare to spend £££ though....

PixiePirate · 02/07/2023 22:44

Do put the tooth in milk though. I had an accident and snapped mine in half. Took it to the dentist the next day and he was able to stick it back in and build up the tooth front and back. It’s been like that for 6 years now and touch wood still alive and doing ok. Is the root exposed?

creamcheeseandlox · 02/07/2023 22:45

I knocked my front tooth out when I fell.of my bike. I had to have a temp bridge whilst a replacement was made then I had a root canal then the crown fitted. I definitely remember it being a week or so before having the temp one fitted and looked like a pirate. My job isn't customer facing and it was before COVID so I just had to get on with it.

stayingcool · 02/07/2023 23:26

Dentist here.
No one can possibly predict what they will do tomorrow. It depends on so many factors. What state is the tooth? How much root is left? Is the root in good condition?

Options long term are a composite filling ( if enough tooth left to bond), a crown, a crown fixed in place by a post, an implant, a bridge or a denture.

You could try storing it in milk and the dentist could attempt to rebond it, but I think that's unlikely.

A pp above said milk storage only for baby teeth. That's incorrect. We would attempt to reimplant a baby tooth.

If the dentist has time tomorrow they may attempt one of the above such as a temporary post crown. Good luck and hope it goes well

Blondey2023 · 02/07/2023 23:47

How did it happen OP? You poor thing, what a shock!

justanothermummma · 03/07/2023 00:02

You could get a temp denture which is held by hooking around the surrounding teeth. This can take a few days mind

But overall the most permanent fix is an implant. It's like a screw, they drill into the bone and once it heals they screw a tooth in. But it's expensive and is not a quick fix and it entirely depends on your bone structure, if you have weak bones (which will show on a CBCT) then there's no promise an implant will work. Implants cost £2800+ depending on area.

If loads hasn't come off they could potentially crown the tooth, but you'll have a temp first and then have to wait two weeks or so for the proper crown to come back from the lab. Unless a local dentist has a CEREC machine where you can get a finished crown in a few hours (this depends on the viability of the tooth you have left to sit the crown on) it's unlikely, but if they do, it will cost you £700+ depending on area.

Anskl · 03/07/2023 00:33

This happened to me too. I had composite bonding. Not sure what the dentist could do tomorrow, I waited months.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/07/2023 00:37

My friend fell on ice and broke off both front teeth like this.
They were crowned very well, and look great. Good luck OP

Notworryingdarling · 03/07/2023 06:21

I emphasise as I also lost a tooth this weekend on Friday night! Mine is a front bottom one, but it's been on the cards as had a root canal ages ago and the root was dead and cracked so been loose a while. I had a night out on Saturday and working in an office this week (wfh majority of the time). This is probably the absolute wrong thing to do, but I have put the tooth back in and bought stuff off Amazon which had plastic teeth and moudable stuff you can stick at the back to hold them. Using the stuff to hold the actual tooth in at the moment but will try the plastic teeth as a stop gap if need to. I'm at dentist in 3 weeks to get a bridge made then fitted 2 weeks later but unsure if will get a temporary in between appointments! It is horrible and I was panicking about the gap until I got this solution figured out, and still a bit worried there'll end up been a period have to live the gap for a bit until its sorted! Good luck getting yours sorted.

Notworryingdarling · 03/07/2023 06:23

*Empathise obviously!

Sewaccidentprone · 03/07/2023 10:38

Ds1 did similar at a swimming pool.

he ‘only’ lost 1/2 of one of his front teeth.

he now has a composite, but he’s still managed to knock that out a couple of times.

not for a few years now though.

hope it’s easily and quickly sorted.

User13630934 · 03/07/2023 10:54

They may make a temporary denture quite quickly, I have had a couple of these within a week or two when I was having extractions but of course you do have to pay for this as well as the proper denture which you will need in the next few months after any healing. DS broke a piece off his front tooth when he was about 15 and had composite bonding which is still fine after 15 years.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 03/07/2023 12:25

Thanks for the replies. I thought I’d let you know what happened. I rang the dentist at 9. Got an apt for 11. Was out of the dentist with a temporary denture at 11.40. Going to work shortly. hooray! Thanks again
