We have a very long travel journey in the cat next week. Any ideas of good travel games / activities for a 6 year old, and also my 3 yo but already accepted that she will just be impossibly for 7+ hours to entertain...

I lived just staring out of the window at that age watching the works go by or spotting different colour cars driving the opposite way

Would you rather questions.
I went shopping and I bought memory game.
Hide the thimble.
Guess who I'm thinking of.
I spy.
Take it in turns to pick a song on Spotify.

You could make up some cards with different questions on them and they pick one out and have to answer whatever it says.

We play guess the animal. So someone thinks of an animal and the others have to guess what it is by asking questions that can only be answered with yes/no. And I spy. Or else first person to see a bus, a cow, a red car etc. Means even the 3 year old can join in.

Audio books - atticus the storyteller was great.

Our own version of Animal, vegetable or mineral. Adapted for younger age. Stories on Audible. Snacks.

I second audiobooks. Not a game as requested, but IME they can successfully while away a good few hours in the car.

You can make bingo cards for both (words for the eldest/pictures for the youngest) and they can mark things off as they see them. Have a small prize for a line and then a full house.

I find six year olds love trivia questions or maths questions so they can show off how clever they are. You could also include the three year old in this if they're that way inclined.

Sticker books/activities are great for this too. Does she have a tray for her lap so she can draw etc? Things like making a paper chain can keep them busy for hours and relatively easy if you cut the paper ahead of time and use pritt stick. It's also fun to get it out full length each time you stop to see how long it's getting.

In terms of chatty games:

What can you use X for? For example, what can you use a thimble for.....a bath for an ant, a cup for fairy, a hat for a tiny man, a very small snack pot etc.

Word at a time/line at a time story - tell a story, everyone takes it in turn to contribute a word/free words/line of the story.

Yes/No game. You have to try and make her day yes/no she has to avoid saying it and vice versa.

The alphabet game go through the alphabet thinking of an animal/person you know/food etc for each letter.

We did the I went to market game, I Spy and pub cricket around that age.

We also used to list, countries, American States etc in turn.

At the moment my 6 year old really likes the game where you have to find cars in order of the rainbow. Also last week I got those car lap tray things from Aldi, they might still have them in stock. I've loaded them up with pens/paper and fidget toys, it stops them dropping everything. But with a journey that long we always plan an outdoor stop off/half day out about half way. A nature place or a really good playground.

Actually the tray may have been a Lidl. I can't remember actually, it wasn't in my local area.

Would you rather is great, we have some boos with questions in and often get one out at the dinner table, it can become very heated when the kids would rather different things. They are very into justifying their reasons why. Sometimes we give points if are able to convince someone to change their mind and agree with you.
A game that my mum is horrified that we play with our kids is 'Final Meal'. You can only play it a couple of times a year as it becomes too repetitive but we go round, course by course saying what we'd have as our death row meal. The kids get very specific and it's very funny. It can be adapted to the im a celeb meal if death row is a bit squeamish for you. Our kids thought that made it even better tho!
We play competitive colour games too where each child has a diff colour to look for and the most wins. We give the older ones harder/rarer colours.
It's also a good time to share our favourite music and let them try diff genres. Nothing beats belting out Bohemian Rhapsody going down the motorway with the children making up some of the lyrics!
