Things to do in Chester.

I'm planning to visit Chester as I'm considering moving there so will be scouting out possible places to live but I wondered if anyone else has any suggestions of what else two adults could do while in and around Chester. What are your must visit places? Is Cheshire Oaks worth visiting?

TIA

Walk the walls if it's a nice day. It's free

Grew up nearby. Yeah as a starting point walk the city walls. There are a couple of museums.
also go down to the river and either get a boat or just walk along, it’s nice

cheshire oaks is ok if it’s raining but not exactly a must do. Chester itself is good for shopping (or always was, I’m a bit out of date). Good choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants.

The zoo is excellent but an expensive day out. But good for adults as well as kids.

It's easy to fill a weekend in Chester without doing anything specific. As pp said, walk the walls and view all the Roman ruins. Go down to the river through the park, always a lovely spot for an ice cream. Visit the cathedral and its gardens (there's usually falconry on the go at weekends), which you can view from the walls). The market is good for lunch. Huge choice of bars and restaurants for your evenings.

Cheshire Oaks is good for shopping, but maybe not what you want to do on the weekend you're scoping areas too live. Chester city centre has plenty of shops so you probably won't want to go to Cheshire Oaks as well.

The falconry closed several years ago...

The cathedral has a free tour plus you can pay for a tower tour which is fantastic. There are a number of themed walking tours - Roman, Medieval, Women of Chester, Stuarts - all of which are great. There's a boat trip down the river (or hire a rowing boat if you prefer).

Open air cinema (Moonlight Flicks) and theatre (Grosvenor Park) over the summer, as well as loads of places for a drink or several in town.

Either visit during a races weekend, to see both the best and worst of Chester bundled into one, or avoid it to see what Chester can really be like if you live there...

As well as the walls, you can pop over the river & walk around the Meadows. St John's church & ruins, as well as the cathedral, and the amphitheatre & Roman gardens... There's a spa in the Grosvenor hotel which is lovely, and/or afternoon tea there.

Oh, and walking along the canal too!

They've opened a new market which is great with a fabulous food court, gorgeous plant stalls and live music.

Thanks all. These are great.

All of the above, and if you're looking for something to do in the evening, book a ghost tour. If you're lucky you might get my fabulous friend as your guide.

Sick To Death is an inexpensive and amusing experience about the history of medicine (Bridge Street), Grosvenor Museum is a traditional museum that's always worth a visit (Grosvenor Street), and a walk round the Walls is a must.

Afternoon Tea at the Grosvenor, superb.

Chester is a great place to visit - and live. I lived there for 14 years and only moved away when I met my husband, we live about an hour away now. I was in Chester yesterday actually, had a lovely lunch with my friend and a wander around. Always a pleasure to visit.

Eat ice-cream 😁🍨

SourDoughToast · 02/07/2023 22:02

Another vote for the new market - amazing food stalls for lunch or dinner as well as a bar that does great cocktails.

Check out what's on at StoryHouse (theatre/ cinema/ music etc)

With it being summer, there's moonlight flicks open air cinema as pp said and also open air theatre in Grosvenor park (book via storyhouse website) - take a picnic and a bottle.

Loads of fab independent bars and Restaurants so avoid the chains!

Chester zoo is brilliant

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/07/2023 22:44

I live there (near) and love it. It's not a place people go shopping to anymore - it's more of a tourist destination.
As people have said - the walls, the Roman Gardens, St John's Church, the river, the park ...
The new market is fab and is being more developed with bars and a cinema in the square outside.
At the moment you have the moonlight flicks, the plays in the park, the Mystery Plays in the cathedral and the theatre.
The Leonardo Hotel is new and really comfortable to stay on.
Where are you looking to move to? City or further out?

  1. Walk the walls
  2. Get tapas/drink from bar next to the walls
  3. Have a bit of a shop
  4. Get chips and icecream from the posh chip shop on main street
  5. Go to the pub opposite
  6. Walk near the canals/pub lunch
  7. Cheshire Oaks - wagamamas
  8. Chester Zoo - afternoon tickets are cheaper (also evening zoo visits in Summer at £16 a head)
  9. Aquarium at Ellesmere but only if there's an offer
  10. Cinema
  11. Drive from Chester to North Wales (Llandudno an hour away)
You only need a day or two to do Chester.
