Need a bomb proof hoover

Posting for traffic. Basically we have a Dyson cordless which has been fine for quickly scooting about, but now our carpets are all 18mos old I’m accepting we need a proper corded job for carpeted areas at least. Added to that, we’ve had work done on the house (and more messy jobs to come) and I think the Dyson’s recent sub-par performance is related to various trades using it for really dirty clean up of brick dust, plaster etc. Ideally I’d like something that could cope with stuff like that. DH wants something with bags but I’m not sure this matters for a hoover’s ability to cope with those types of jobs?

The obvious answer is a Henry, but I’m not sure if I’m sold on a cylinder as opposed to an upright vacuum.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!!!!

Sorry but I'm afraid the most logical option is Henry. He fits all of your requirements and is the only hoover I've had that actually gets the job done well without any faffing or constantly cleaning filters etc.

Yep another vote for Henry

WaitingfortheTardis · 02/07/2023 11:44

Yep agree with the others, Henry works far better in our old dusty house than the Dyson did.

Came to say Henry when I saw your title.
I’m a cleaner and have had clients with all sorts of hoovers. Henry can be taken apart and fixed easily, the bits are easily unblocked, the parts are available on line. I even killed a motor when one client had a flood and I accidentally sucked up some water. We took off the top half and put it in a bin bag with a bag of rice for a week, it recovered completely.

The only irritating thing is that the main body sometimes gets stuck as you pull it through doorways etc and when you look back his cheeky little smile makes you want to kick his face in.

I've never owned a Henry, but my Miele is indestructible and has performed flawlessly for a decade. It's the German engineering.

Mychitchatdays · 02/07/2023 11:48

Another vote for Henry. I've had mine for years and he's still amazing!

smooththecat · 02/07/2023 11:49

You can’t use your normal household hoover for building waste.

PureBlackVoid · 02/07/2023 11:52

I posted similar a while ago (except I had a shitty Shark). I didn’t want a Henry as my regular vacuum, as I had one and hated him. The consensus was to either borrow a Henry or get a cheap knock off one until messy/dusty jobs were completed then get an easy to use vacuum for normal house cleaning.

I got a wetvac from Wickes for £40 until building jobs were completed and now have a corded Miele (which beats Henry on rugs, by a mile).

The wetvac is still in the shed, I use it for unclogging drains and the odd messy DIY job.

DahliaMacNamara · 02/07/2023 11:58

I've had all kinds of expensive vacuums die on me because DH has decided to feed them stones and rubble behind my back. Now I only buy ones that are easy to take apart and unblock, and don't require too much in the way of fiddly maintenance. The Screwfix Titan ones are good for this. I also have a small cheap Beldray pet one to carry upstairs, which is also fairly easygoing, and can be replaced without making a massive dent in the budget.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 02/07/2023 11:59

Henry for stuff like building waste (or we bought a wet vac from Lidl that’s our ‘garage hoover’ but for household general stuff - Miele cat and dog. My hair is over 2ft long and it can cope with that (we have no pets!). I’ve had mine since 2010 and it is still good!

^^ This.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 02/07/2023 12:29

Sorry, another vote for Henry. A Miele would be a close second but despite purportedly being bomb proof stopped working just after the warranty run out 🤨

Findyourneutralspace · 02/07/2023 12:30

Henry’s your man I’m afraid. I do love my Miele but there’s only so much I’d hammer it.

LibertyLily · 02/07/2023 12:41

Yet another vote for Henry! We've had ours 15 years with no issues and at one point we had two dogs and four cats, plus we've done loads of building work.

Prior to that we'd tried virtually everything including a Dyson and a Sebo (the latter came highly recommended but still only lasted about three years) and Henry - or in our case Hetty - is a million times better imho.

SleepingisanArt · 02/07/2023 12:57

I don't understand the love for Henry and his clan. I loathe them with a passion! They don't suck properly on any floor surface (and yes I've used both a James and a Henry and always have to hoover again after a tradesman has 'cleaned up' using one). I have had a Dyson which I found to be heavy, noisy and not great on wood/laminate/tiles. For the last 10 years I've had the same Miele. It is indestructible!

WeAreTheHeroes · 02/07/2023 13:03

First rule of having work done in your house: hide your vacuum cleaner so contractors can't use it for their clean up.

Second rule: buy a canister vac for this kind of clean up. We bought a fairly cheap wet and dry vac from Screwfix.

We have a Sebo X4 Pet and it's great for carpets and normal household vacuuming.

TheCraicDealer · 02/07/2023 13:05

Fine, you’ve all convinced me! At least 3yo DD will be delighted with its ridiculous face- I showed her a photo and she went, “A toy? For ME?!”. No babes, soz.

For anyone concerned about Henry’s diet, big bits of debris are always brushed up- this is more for residue and dust plus obviously the carpets.

Before I buy I will check out screwfix as well, a few of you have recommended those and if they’re much cheaper it might be worth a go.

Thanks all!

It’s the building dust that destroys the hoover fyi.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/07/2023 13:13

I hate Henry hoovers with a passion. I've never used one that was any good. They don't suck and they're constantly falling over or getting stuck.

I've used a Stihl hoover for years, it's a builders hoover (DP is a builder) it's a cylinder, and can hoover wet stuff too. Bloody brilliant.
