Old jewellery - what to do with it

I have quite a few bits of old jewellery. Mostly nothing fancy. (9ct gold, small gemstones - but one decent solitaire diamond pendant) Some is stuff gifted to me years ago, others I inherited from my Mum. (I have her wedding and engagement ring and my Dad's wedding ring) The value is minimal I'm sure.

I can't decide what to do with it. I don't want it stuck in a drawer. I don't really wear that much jewellery - and I don't generally wear gold - so even if I had it remodelled I probably wouldn't wear it. (And it would probably cost me more to remodel)

I'm not that sentimental, but it still feels a bit wrong to sell it to use the money to buy something I can keep.

No children of my own to pass it onto and only nephews.

I'm going round in circles. What other options are there?

In the end it's all just stuff and if you're not sentimental it's silly to just keep it. It would be more useful to sell it

You're not being disloyal to your parents by selling their things for things more practical for you. Would you want your children, if you have any, to keep your stuff stuck in drawers not knowing what to do with it?

Sorry just noticed no children

Take it to a jeweller who buys gold, you might get enough to buy something you like

If you do decide to sell it, now is a good time. I went to my local jewellers with a broken necklace a bracelet and some odd earrings. I nearly fell through the floor when she gave me nearly £700.

I sent a box of jewellery, some silver but most of it costume jewellery to Vintage Cash Cow. Very good service and money in your bank quick. They will ring you up with their offer and its up to you if you accept it. If it's too low they will return your items to you.

I'd take it to a proper jeweller not one of these cash 4 gold places. Why? A proper jeweller will usually buy it based on overall value/sellability. The cash 4 gold places like cash converters will do it by weight of the gold and if it's not in good condition they'll just melt it down and sell it as recycled gold. Otherwise, you could sell it on Ebay but it'll probably take a bit longer to shift it all.

Generally one of the reasons people buy real jewellery is because it holds value and, if needed, you can sell it. I’d get an estimate at least - there’s no point in it collecting dust if there are other things you value more.

I agree with others, take it all to a jeweller and get it properly valued so you can sell it.

I have a collection of jewellery I dont wear. Some was gifted to me, the rest inherited.

I don’t need the money at the moment so the 18-22ct gold pieces I will hang on to. Gold generally increases in value and this should provide a little something to fall back on in my older years. If I don’t need the money I will pass these onto my children who will probably sell them for a new phone or something equally useless.

I do wear jewellery so I might get a few things remodelled into an item I would like to wear. I was thinking of doing this with inherited wedding rings.

The rest I am going to sell and buy somethings I really want and will use like decent garden tools or ridiculously expensive cookwear. Maybe finally buy that Hermès scarf.

My sister and I inherited our mum's jewellery.
There wasn't much that either of us would wear or fitted anyway so we took it to a local jeweller who melted it all down and made two really beautiful an simple gold bangles which we wear regularly.

It was definitely worth the money and we still have the actual gold we inherited.
