Just Giving - is a fee now charged?

I'm giving some money via Just Giving to a charity a friend is raising money for. However, when I go to donate, it is including a surcharge (a 'gift') for Just Giving which I cannot remove (although I can get the slider down to a £2 donation to Just Giving).

I haven't had this in the past , IIRC. Have th8ngs now changed and I just have to pay the fee if I'm donating via Just Giving?

Many thanks

I think Just Giving has always taken a percentage. Maybe instead of taking a percentage of the final amount, you they the take it upfront now .

I used to work in the charity sector and Just Giving have always taken a percentage from the charity when they transfer funds. It appears from your post that JG are either passing the surcharge on to the donor, or charging the donor as well. The latter would not surprise me.

Thank you. I found out how to disable the fee. They've changed tbe webpage making it really difficult to opt out of tbe fee - basically, the fee is prepopulated on the page and you can only adjust the 'slider' to make the fee higher or lower (with a minimum of £2). No box to tick or untick. Instead you need to use the edit function to remove tbe additional fee.

It's an awful thing to say but I don't think I would have donated if I had also to pay an additional fee. Irrational perhaps

There's always a fee.

Just giving and similar companies don't do it for free.

Reviving this as I just donated and because I skipped through the small print as I was expecting amount - gift aid - payment method I've paid £7.50 on top of a £40 donation. It's some kind of running costs and doesn't appear as your final total before you pay.
Won't be using them to donate ever again.

Riverlee · 22/02/2024 10:27

I noticed that as well on a recent donation. An extra amount was added. I presumed the Gift Aid was my added by the tax man , but instead I paid extra.

I have no qualms about Just Giving taking a small percentage , they’ve got to pay for the running of the site etc and people are made aware of that when they submit a charity. However, like you, I wasn’t aware of this change in policy when you donate.

I'm Director of Fundraising for a charity. Justgiving introduced this feature some years ago. I don't like it as supporters often don't realise that JG will charge something on top of the donation amount, as PP said. But you can change it to £0 and only donate what you were initially planning by editing the "Tip to Justgiving" at the very end of the donation process, but of course they don't make that option very clear.
Just a hint to people who disagree with the way they do these charges. Please don't stop supporting your friends and family if they are using JG - previously the charities had to pay a larger transaction fee per donation. So eg. a £10 donation online would have around 60p deducted before being paid out.

I'd rather pay 60p per £10 than 7.50 for £40! I won't be using it again because instead of feeling positive about donating I feel tricked.

I understand what you mean, but previously the hit for the costs of JG was taken by the charity - the donor would donate eg.£10, £10 would leave their account and the charity would get c.£9.40 once JG deducted their transaction fees. Now a donor has the option to add a little bit to cover the costs if the platform or not, as they choose. Of course the problem is that JG defaults to a relatively high "tip" and makes the other options much harder to see, so they rely on donors not noticing the other options.
Thank you for supporting charities anyway, it's a really really tough sector to be in at the moment.

OneFrenchEgg · 22/02/2024 17:54

I think if the default had reflected the change from charity to donor that would have been better. It just stinks to take almost another £10 off someone with no transparency. It should show in the total they way gift aid is reflected.

caramac04 · 08/10/2024 14:48

I donated 2 days ago and only managed to get the tip down to £2.50. That’s 10% on top of my donation. I think £1 would be enough.

But it's not a little is it

You were previously charged 60p per 10, which would add up to 2.40, not 3 times the amount
