What would you take with you on self catering holiday? (Flying)

Going on holiday in a few weeks. It's bed and breakfast but the room is more like a studio apartment with a little kitchenette.

Destination is quite expensive so I'd like to keep costs down but don't want to take the kitchen sink.

So far I think I'll take some of my favourite teabags.

Do you take anything with you or just buy when you get there?

I would just buy when I get there. I only just manage to stay withing my luggae allowance as it is, without taking food or other supplies as well!

FarTooHotForMe · 01/07/2023 11:39

Salt and pepper, tea bags.

dementedpixie · 01/07/2023 11:41

We took lots of things including blue curaçao to make cocktails 😆. We are in a villa so took washing sheets/tablets, dishwasher tablets, clothes pegs (only provided with 6 here!), coffee sachets for dd, some nandos peri peri powder for putting on chicken for our bbq. Sponge, cloth, washing up gloves and some antibacterial wipes.

AnchorWHAT · 01/07/2023 11:42

Marmite 😁 and anything that i might not be able to get out there that i particularly love. Other than that maybe a few spices / herbs if i planned on cooking as buying a big box for one meal or so is a waste, make sure they are obvious in what they are not decanted into little bags or anything 😁 enjoy your trip

cherryassam · 01/07/2023 11:42

Generally buy when we get there but we do usually take:

teabags (in a food bag not the box to save space)
a couple of cartons of long life oat milk (just in case we struggle to find milk alternatives)
a sharp kitchen knife (in hold luggage obviously, wrap it up well or one with a blade cover - if you’re wanting to properly cook, I’ve found the knives can be dreadful)
freezer blocks (not frozen - but so we can freeze them and use for picnics)

dementedpixie · 01/07/2023 11:45

Yes, dh also takes a couple of decent knives. We wrap them in a teatowel secured with a hair bobble

I would just go to the supermarket at the other end. It's the most fun part of arriving in a holiday destination, exploring the shelves at the shop!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 01/07/2023 11:48

I've got a plastic box full of condiments that I collect - salt, pepper, ketchup, olive oil sachets, 5g sachets of herbs etc. That's quite useful as otherwise you'd need to buy full size pockets of everything.

Washing up liquid
Sponge
Tea towels
Anti bac wipes

AdaColeman · 01/07/2023 11:56

Corkscrew
Cooks knife
Tea towel

Blueberrycreampie · 01/07/2023 12:09

Coffee, t bags, small carton of long life milk, a few J cloths and some kitchen cleaner in a small bottle! Also a few salt pepper sachets

OhamIreally · 01/07/2023 12:33

Rubber gloves is a great idea. I get dermatitis if I wash up without them.

Corkscrew
Cooks knife
Tea towel

I keep a corkscrew in my suitcase permanently to make sure I don't ever get caught out on holiday Wink

Bottle stopper/fizz keeper
Cool bag and some freezer blocks
A small Tupperware or two for leftovers/picnic bits
YY to clothes pegs and dishwasher tablets (1 per day, plus an extra 2 or 3).

Consumable/leaking things we tend to buy there.

doubleoseven · 01/07/2023 12:43

I take my own coffee and travel cafetiere, my morning coffee is v important to me Grin. Other than that a speaker for my music and a turban for wet hair. That's about it. I don't cook on holiday so if I'm self catering that means eating out to me. I usually rent privately though and find most apartments well equipped with cloths/cleaning stuff etc.

Maddy70 · 01/07/2023 12:45

Just go to the supermarket when you get there!

Maddy70 · 01/07/2023 12:46

Lots of foodstuffs you can't take anymore so just take your tea bags and buy there

dementedpixie · 01/07/2023 12:49

Our villa had nothing except a couple of toilet rolls. Had to buy hand-wash, washing up liquid, kitchen roll, sprays for cleaning, etc. Also found spray here (fuerteventura) that's for removing deodorant and sweat stains so bought some to bring home for smelly gym kit

We brought bin bags and some freezer bags too.

CC4712 · 01/07/2023 12:49

Before the trip, I look up where the nearest lidl or supermarket is. Sometimes- you can check prices before you go, to get an idea of what things are cheaper to buy here. Also pack a few carrier bags so you don't need to buy them there!

I take instant coffee or a few coffee bags, garlic powder (adds flavour to so many things), salt and pepper. Tampons are very difficult to find in Thailand for example, so take sanitary supplies if needed.

Read reviews for the apartment and what exactly is provided in terms of the kitchenette. I've been to places with no microwave, no oven, no kettle, single hot plate, no fridge etc- so don't assume a kitchenette will have the same facilities you have in your own kitchen.

Its really only meat and dairy that's prohibited in most places. Its nice not to have to buy full-sized items if you can bring a smaller amount/item with you

dementedpixie · 01/07/2023 12:52

And yes to taking carrier bags. I used bags for life while packing and had a variety of smaller carrier bags too.

Shouldbedoing · 01/07/2023 12:53

Sandwich bags for leftovers and picnics. I generally buy a large 'souvenir' mug at the start of the week for brewing up.Either local pottery or actual souvenir!

dementedpixie · 01/07/2023 12:55

We have been spending our money and time in Mercadona mostly with a few trips to hiperdino and the local lidl. My lidl plus app is now in Spanish 😆

Augend23 · 01/07/2023 12:55

Sandwich bags and bag clips and teabags but otherwise I buy anything I need there.

mrsbyers · 01/07/2023 12:55

I don’t take anything , go to supermarket as soon as we get there and taxi back if getting a lot of heavy stuff , you might find things like salt pepper and oil are there anyway from previous people.
