How do you stop glassware going cloudy in the dishwasher??

Sorry for this banal thread. I have just moved into a house served by Thames Water - very hard water. I use a dishwasher and all my glasses are cloudy. Advice on the internet is to wash glassware in vinegar - I'm slightly reluctant - it's a lot of vinegar! What products are best to use in the dishwasher to ensure sparkling glasses? Separate salt and rinse aid rather than 3 in 1 dishwasher tablets?
Thanks.

We have hard water and have never had cloudy glasses? We just keep the salt and rinse aid topped up :)

What's the issue with hand washing? We hand wash all glasses, anything wood or silicone, baking trays, pots and pans. Plates, mugs and cutlery are dishwashed.

My local Mr Fixit days never use 3in1 tablets for anything. They are really bad for dishwashed and washing machines. Use original old fashioned powder, with additional salt for dishwasher. Machines are cleaner and last longer.

I'd rather everything went in the dishwasher.

Trouble is not everything is dishwasher safe

Im
getting the kitchen replaced (well beyond touching up!!!)

im still in two minds about a dishwasher.

all I really need is a dirty dishes cupboard so they're off the work surface!!

You can change the salt/rinse aid dispensing settings so you want both on full choke if you've got hard water. And you need to add regularly, I do our salt container once a month and the rinse aid once a week - we live in Gloucestershire and our water wrecks a kettle every 2 years in spite of repeated descaling.

I've also got a DH puts everything in the dishwasher. He nearly ended up under the patio when he put in a Dartington crystal painted vase that I'd had for my 21st birthday and it ruined it. He still hasn't twigged that I keep using fabric softener on his golf clothing.... and he walks around like he's just been electrocuted due to the static. Little things please little minds....

I just buy cheap glasses and replace when completely ruined.

We’re hard thames water too. Everything goes in the dishwashers (so devoted we have 2). Separate rinse aid and salt with cheapest supermarket own brand tablets/whatever is on offer (never 3 in 1). Never had an issue with cloudy glasses.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 01/07/2023 18:36

We just accept that glasses go cloudy and buy cheapies from Matalan and IKEA that we replace relatively often.

We hand wash decent glasses.

I'd rather err on the side of caution and hand wash the more delicate items.

Dishwasher is great though for crockery

It appears that getting a water softener could be worth the investment. We have very soft water and every time I stay somewhere with hard water I'm thankful I don't have to put up with it day to day, because it's awful.

Ruins your glassware and appliances, needs more shampoo and other detergents and hair washed in hard water feels horrible. When I go home it makes me grateful for the nice water we have where I live because it means that I've never descaled anything and I have glassware that is decades old that has been through the dishwasher hundreds of times without it going cloudy.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 01/07/2023 21:50

If you install a water softener do take care as you may need to replace all your metal pipework. Pinholes in pipes get blocked by linescale and when you run softened water through them the plugs eventually clear. And then you have water coming through your lounge ceiling. Or least we did. ..
