So I've never listened to a podcast before but I want to get into them!
I usually listen to an audiobook whilst cleaning and I find it makes chores much more enjoyable 😅
But now I'd like to try a podcast but there's so many out there I have no idea where to start!
Any recommendations of a podcast for a listening newbie? 😊

i like narrative podcasts best - my two faves are Ear Hustle and This American Life

bbc sounds has loads of good ones: Bad People is interesting and easy to listen to but there are loads to search through

The Boring Talks - people talk about topics which seem boring but are interesting to them. Loved the episode on doormats.

Ooh, is that still going? It was really interesting, my favourite one was about pallets, which was unbelievably fascinating. All the pallets are collectively shared amongst the users in the 'European pallet pool'.

I listen mostly to food, comedy and true crime podcasts, a lot from the BBC, but I don't use the Sounds app unless the pod I want to listen to isn't available on Antennapod, which I use to listen as BBC Sounds is shit, especially for series.

My current fave is The Rabbit Hole Detectives. Each week they take three different topics and go down the rabbit hole exploring the history of, eg, ties or the British seaside or whatever! It's absolutely fascinating but such lovely gentle listening.

If you have even a little bit of interest is history, The Rest is History will absolutely hook you. Great chemistry between the presenters and v interesting, but not over-detailed. Covers wide range of subjects; the holocaust to Marilyn Monroe and everywhere in between.

This is my favourite too. I also enjoyed Lucy Worsley's Lady killers, some eps of Table Manners with Lenie and Jessie Ware - I pick the guests I'm interested in, ditto Elizabeth Day's How to Fail. There's an old one on BBC Sounds with Victoria Coren Mitchell, 'Women talking about cars' She has some brilliant guests.

I don’t think there have been any new ones for ages but there’s a back catalogue for the OP! I also loved the pallet one - fascinating! Also the Toilet Graffiti one with the analysis of what’s in the men’s vs women’s.

I really like Dax Shepherd's Armchair series - the main one is armchair expert where he interviews celebrities, but the spin-off podcasts are great. Armchair anonymous is where people call in to tell funny or embarrassing stories around a theme, and Flightless bird is his New Zealander friend doing episodes about a different aspect of American life each time. Heartily recommend!

I have recently got into The rest is History and I love it.

hollyblueivy · 03/07/2023 20:18

Closet confessions is great

Two black women having a closed conversation that we all get to listen to.

JellyBabiesToManual · 03/07/2023 20:31

The Adam Buxton Podcast is great. Rambling chat about all sorts of things with great guests.

Backlisted is good if you're a reader.

Desert Island Discs.

The Hairy Bikers Agony Uncles is funny.

Ramblings with Clare Balding - she and a guest go walking somewhere and chat along the way.

Another option is to search by guest. If you're using the iPhone podcast app, you could search for someone famous you like and see which podcasts they've been a guest on, and try a few that way.

I'm not sure what I thought Charles Spencer would be like but he's absolutely charming isn't he?

mynameiscalypso · 03/07/2023 21:27

@CarbonNeutral He is! Totally unexpectedly so. I had always sort of written him off because of his family but he's so interesting and has such enthusiasm for it that it's very endearing.

lljkk · 03/07/2023 22:28

I know I dislike a lot of these, way too waffley. I sigh at the chatty giggly podcasts.

You can listen to a lot of recent BBC radio on BBC sounds, so basically any music, news or talk programme, local or Gaelic or sport etc. There is bound to be something there that you'd love.
