Tingling and nausea after a hair dye patch

Feeling unwell after a hair dye patch test at a salon I’ve been going to for 14 years. Tingling face and lips and nausea, I’ve washed the product off but skin still burning. Was an hour ago.

Uggh, has this happened to anyone else?

Have you got an antihistamine to take?
it happened to my daughter, you can develop an allergy to anything at any time.

Only hay fever tablets. Should I take one? Eek

Yes, take one. Just keep an eye on it for getting worse.

It's not uncommon to develop an allergy to a hair colour product that you've used previously with no obvious issues.

Sometimes it's because the manufacturer has changed the formula but you can develop a sensitivity at any point.

Definitely take an anti-histamine and go to A&E if you suffer serious swelling or it starts to affect your breathing. As you've only had a patch test, the amount of product absorbed by your skin is small so hopefully, you'll be ok this time.

I had an asthma attack one time after getting gel nails done for a couple of years without previous incident. After having tests done, it turns out that I'm allergic to the methacrylates used in nail products.

Also, please don't take risks and get highlights done either. Although you're likely to be ok with the bleach, it will need toning afterwards and if you tell your hairdresser that you've had a previous reaction to a patch test and they go ahead, they won't be covered by insurance if you have a subsequent reaction. Some hairdressers care more about ££ than the safety of their clients. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks both. I went to the local walk in centre in the end because my face swelled a bit and I felt heavy in my chest (also asthmatic). Racing heart beat as well. Was put on observation for 5 hours. Nurse was very kind and said a hair dye allergy can develop at any point and I was given more antihistamine.

I only have half head highlights twice a year. Now I think about it, last time I went, I felt a burning sensation and was relieved when the foils were removed. I didn’t think it would be an allergy developing. Doctor said next time the reaction would be worse so that’s me done I guess. I never want to feel that unwell again. Mousey blond from now on.

Glad you’ve got it sorted, it’s a scary thing to happen 🙏

Ah and thank you for your quick advice, it was the right thing to do to take an antihistamine.

In the morning I have to phone the salon and tell my colourist who has become my friend over the years. A shame but that's life.
