Does anyone else hate leaving the dog in the kennels

When you go on holiday? I get on very well
with the owner of the kennels that I send my dog to so I know he is always well looked after and cared for. Plenty of walks, comfortable kennels/sleeping area etc.

I think my dog always has a ball when he goes, but I can’t help but feel slightly guilty when leaving him there. It’s not like I can tell him I’m only going away for 10 days or ring him while I’m away.

He’s a spaniel and is quite strong/boisterous so I don’t feel there is anyone in my family who
would be able to take him while I’m away.

Anyone else feel the same?

Our dog doesn't give two hoots about being left in kennels, however it is the same facility he day-cares at two days a week, and a small family farm arrangement so he's very familiar and knows everyone/loves it.

I do still feel anxious in the run up though, but once they're in and we're wherever we're going i'm usually fine.

Apparently they don't have awareness of time - so you could leave them and they wouldn't know if it was 4 hours or 4 days - not sure if that's true though.

Either he comes with us or we use a home boarder. I wouldn't put him in kennels.

I used to until we found the most amazing place. DDog used to get very excited when we arrived. Lots of wagging- she used to love it there. Always came out groomed and sweet smelling and happy.

Unfortunately the regulations on kennels changed and they just couldn't afford to make the adjustments to fit in with these so they had to close down. The other local kennel we found that was able to adhere to the new regulations was awful and after one short stay we never put her in kennels again and found a home boarder who she was happy with.

I couldn't leave my girl in kennels. She's a rescue and while she's fine being left for a few hours during the day etc., I couldn't leave her with a stranger for a few days. We only went away once for a few days, while my mother moved in to look after her, and a friend walked her twice a day.

My inlaws always left their dog in kennels, for up to two weeks, and she was fine.

Some mumsnetters seem to liken kennels to jails which is a bit daft of course you are going to miss your dog but it is safe and fed and excersised, you know the owners so that's a start. You can ask if they do photos on social media but that won't help you will just worry its missing you. Just try and relax about it.

My mum’s friend left her dog at kennels and came back to discover that the owner thought he was lovely and had been trying to mate him with her own dog all week. Apparently she was quite open about it and wasn’t pleased to discover that he’d had the snip! But since then he’s humping everything and friend has had to take him to a behaviourist. In short, you don’t know what the fuck they’re doing with your dog while you’re away.

OMG!

Weve had our dog 4 years. We’ve only had one holiday without her (few days in NY). My aunt and uncle do dog fostering and had her. We’re going to a wedding soon and my sil will have her.

we love taking her on holiday though obviously it restricts us. But it’s very easy to find dog friendly accommodation in the UK and Ireland. She’s been to Ireland twice, Cornwall loads, Lancashire, Southwold, Wales, Brighton, Somerset and the Cotswolds and seems to like finding new places to sniff out!

Kennels seems to do my dog good. He likes the simplicity of it I think. No expectations, just play and rest. But he doesn't have separation anxiety. Other types of anxiety, but not that!

We had a collie who loved kennels food water peace and quiet nobody wanting attention from him he hated us most of the time 😃

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2023 13:33

@Archeron didn't the Kennel owner notice the lack of testicles in the dog she was forcing to mate,?

cryinglaughing · 30/06/2023 13:52

I own a kennels.
The majority of dogs love it. There are the odd few who are okay but you can tell they'd rather be at home but on the most part, they thrive on the routine.

I have many customers who are home boarders, dog walkers, vets and vet nurses. Bizarrely, the home boarders say they aren't comfortable leaving them with home boarders.
We have customers, more than one, who travel over 30 miles to us because they know the dogs get great care with us.
We send daily pictures and updates if the customer wants them. There are some who don't want them!

Elphame · 30/06/2023 13:55

No because we don't do it.

If they can't come with us then I ask my son to come and stay with them. If he's not available then either DP or I stay .

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 30/06/2023 13:57

My dogs go to the best kennels - they really are amazing. My old dog used to go to a home boarder but my current ones are hounds and too boisterous/over-stimulated by other dogs so much calmer in kennels. I know they have a lot of 1:1 care and playing. I also feel better since we got DDog2 as they are great friends.

I always feel guilty that I can't explain how long we'll be and let know know we'll definitely be back for them!

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2023 14:13

I'm leaving my pup in kennels end of September and yes I'm apprehensive but it's just for a weekend and the kennels I've used for years. I do think dogs adapt if they have good care.

JimnJoyce · 30/06/2023 14:17

Hate leaving mine at the kennels, he always comes home fine but doesnt eat much the first couple of days while he's settling in.
I go abroad once a year to my parents usually for 9 nights with DD. its the only proper break I get all year as DD is autistic, doesn't attend school and I'm a lone parent who works from home.
If we go away in the UK, Ddog always comes with us.
Still feel guilty though.

BoobyDazzler · 30/06/2023 14:19

I’d have not got a dog if I thought I’d have ever have to leave him in kennels. He stays with my parents and their dog when we go away, who’s new known since the day we collected him, and he finds that hard enough, he’d be absolutely distraught with kennels.

BestIsWest · 30/06/2023 14:47

It’s a bone of contention here with us. I’d be happy to leave them in a kennels that friends use and which comes highly recommended. DH won’t contemplate it yet we’re finding it difficult to find home boarders. They just don’t return our calls which doesn’t bode well for reliability.
Until now we’ve taken them with us or family have looked after them but that’s not an option at the moment.
