Incorrectly sent email

Fucking auto fill!!

Sent a work email regarding updates to a process, no personal information or anything. But when I cc'd someone in it auto filled to someone outside my organisation. I didn't notice but my colleague did.

I feel physically sick. I have emailed my line manager, my data security team and the person I sent it to incorrectly to report/apologise.

But I'm absolutely petrified I'm going to lose my job because of it 😭

Experienced please!

Wow, this is a super common thing to happen. I shouldn't think it even could be sackable with your service unless it's an epic data breach, which you've mentioned it's not. One of my reports accidentally sent relatively sensitive info to a journo recently and i just gave her a hug because she was so mortified. The journo deleted and didnt use the info. If it was a boring process email without anything sensitive in, I wouldn't bother telling everyone you've told - I'd just tell the recipient "sorry, sent in error. Can you delete please?"

As long as your manager and your data protection team are aware, im sure it'll be no issue as long as there really is only small amounts of personal info such as names and email addresses and not really sensitive stuff like health matters etc

"GDPR!!" is thrown around on MN almost as much as "safeguarding!!!"
And you'll undoubtedly be told sooner or later today you'll a) get the sack b) be fined 30,000 for GDPR breach c) flogged in public by your line manager.

The reality is, as everyone knows, it happens. We're human. I received an email from my line manager this week, not meant for me, containing information that could be seen as sensitive. (money etc) As I'm not a "GDPR!!!" kind of Mumsnetter, I sent her a message saying "think you sent me this by mistake"

You've taken the right steps so far. Don't worry.

Oh the irony

Not a single poster has mentioned GDPR. Aside from… you

If the worst mistake you've made in 20 years is an incorrectly addressed e-mail I think you should be fine!

If it was alist of clients bank details you might have a problem, but an internal processes email? No one will give a shit!

That's why I said:

"And you'll undoubtedly be told sooner or later today you'll a) get the sack b) be fined 30,000 for GDPR breach c) flogged in public by your line manager."

Because that's what happens on all threads like this.

Lesssugarketchup · 30/06/2023 08:33

Well didn’t look like it was going that way, in fact if you read the thread - quite the opposite 😂

KnitMePurlMe · 30/06/2023 08:34

You know no one has ever been sacked but you think you’ll be sacked?

Seems like a weird over reaction to a common mistake 🤷‍♀️
