Migraine relief hats, do they work?

Hello. Do these help? Good reviews but the gel eye mask and bean bag warming bag that I have don't stay warm or cold for very long. I mostly run a wash cloth under hot water and lay it across my eyes/cheeks for sinus pain, or cold gel pack on neck for migraine.

I was just going to suggest the gel eye mask but see that you've tried it.
As a long time migraine sufferer, having tried all the tricks, the best things for me have been meds - zomig nasal spray taken at onset of migraine, and aimovig injections which you do once a month at home.
You have my sympathies, migraines are bloody horrendous Flowers

Oops, forgot to add the picture. One you can heat or freeze both.

I use something similar but it has ice cubes that Velcro across the head..I have 2 so once one has melted, the other is used. Works very well but not quickly..my head gets v hot & it's very soothing if used along with meds.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 30/06/2023 03:03

Thank-you. I think I'll go for it and get the one that can be hot or cold.

Triptans all the way. All the non-medical interventions in the world aren't like a pill that makes it entirely stop in 20 minutes.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 30/06/2023 04:43

I don't think I am as bad as some, as I used to be much worse. I didn't order one afterall, not sure if I want a snug hat on when head feels like its in a vice grip. I took some tylonol with codiene and it took the edge off. We have bad air outside from forest fire smoke and I suspect it is causing this as my son also has a migraine snd feels weak too.

Pregnant and suffering with one right now. I have multiple ice packs that I swap out when one melts so I always have something cold. I also use the migraine tens machine. Provides relief while it's on but nothing gets rid of my migraines except a triptan.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 01/07/2023 01:50

I'm sorry you have a migraine while pregnant, can you take that med while pregnant? I have a tens unit but need new sticky thingies. I was thinking of trying a Dr Ho system, as my tens unit is about 20 yrs old now. I do the same with the gel packs. I have a freezer drawer that is filled with gel packs and ice packs. If I don't move around or talk to much it lessens, if I walk my head pounds. I'm ok if I stay quietly in my chair. I'll look that med up but I don't know if I need something that powerful though I appreciate the suggestion and will look it up. Usually triggered by my my neck.

I am reading about triptans now. I haveca feeling they're not for ne as I already take Gabapentin for a seizure disorder and I take some blood pressure meds too.

@Forgottenmypasswordagain My GP advised me I can take my triptans as there is no evidence they are harmful but obviously not a lot of research has been done on them as pregnant women don't volunteer to trial meds. But for me my migraines are so awful there is no option of not taking the triptans as otherwise I would be in bed for days on end unable to function. Before I became pregnant I was getting regular botox to treat the migraines which helped but all that had to be stopped once I found out I was pregnant.

AnnaMagnani · 01/07/2023 03:34

Bag of frozen peas is a lot better than a wet flannel.

And triptans are better than that. Codeine isn't recommended for migraine.

A proper Cefaly machine is also better than TENS.

VeganFromSveden · 01/07/2023 04:34

My London Neurologist (Queen Sq) told me that as a migraine sufferer, I am susceptible to having a stroke, and using triptans (of any kind) can exacerbate an onset.

Sure enough back in 2016, an MRI scan showed infarctions in my brain.

I’m not wishing to scare anyone, but I wish I’d known above info earlier.

Prior to receiving the info above,I was prescribed 18 sumatriptans per 28 days, but suffered attacks for approx 25 days per month.

I was told back then, that I should never have a triptan again (and I haven’t), but to take a combo of two 500mg paracetamol plus three 300mg aspirin….. but for no more than ten times per month…. I assume only ten to avoid going into medication overuse which can also trigger pain.

Disclaimer.. above is what I was told by a senior consultant…. I’m not stating it will definitely apply to you, but I just wanted you to be aware.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 01/07/2023 06:19

Thank-you for your replies. Wgen I looked it up, I saw that that med could be a risk for people with high blood pressure, and I take 4 meds for my blood pressure. I don't often take codiene, I know about rebound headaches.

Well thanks again.

I cant take triptans due to blood pressure issues and don’t like codeine so unfortunately have to rely on paracetamol and ibuprofen, which are often neither use nor ornament.

I bought one of these hats a few weeks ago and have found it definitely does offer relief, Ive only tried it cold not hot. It certainly doesn't get rid of the migraines but does improve symptoms. It does make me feel a bit dizzy though after taking it off. I got mine for 19 quid on amazon so for that price would recommend!

user40643 · 01/07/2023 12:49

I have one, but not the one pictured and it does help.

Which migraine tens machine do you have please

Soopq · 01/07/2023 13:24

I got a migraine hat and while I liked the coolness the heaviness of it made my neck and head feel even worse, now I just use a small ice pack.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 02/07/2023 04:27

I think the cap may be ok-ish, but it seems like sort term relief.
The tens unit I have is from around the year 2000. I can't find it, but haven't used it in years due to my dc always needing it for their neck and I have a feeling I gave it to them when they moved out. I used it a lot back in early 2000, but as my neck pain decreased so did my needing to use it. I bought it from a physio therapist for $80. Canadian. It had a name like Pocket Therapist because it was small. My friend has a Dr Ho, but a larger set with assorted size pads. Mine is/was small.
I used a couple of ice packs at my shoulder and hip areas, and hopefully the coming rains will help put out the fires. I can't smell the smoke outside at least. Pretty sure the bad air was the trigger.

I do recomend tens units but I can't say which is best, I bought mine as my pt used it on me.
