Cycle 2 miles on a flat path, Have a fun swim for 45 minutes and cycle 2 miles home after having their lunch after the swimming?

@AFewScrewsLucy in that case then I’d go for it! My nerves are still shot after cycling on roads with my younger nephew 😬

coxesorangepippin · 29/06/2023 18:31

It sounds like a fab activity , you'd be kind to offer 😄

coxesorangepippin · 29/06/2023 18:32

Jeez the responses on here 😂😂

Of course they could, no reason not to. when i was 5 we walked the just under 2 miles to the pool and back and spent 2 hours in the water ( all without parents, just my 9 year old brother) If a child is struggling to do that you have to ask why they are so unfit.

Why would you have to ask why they are so unfit? They might not be unfit at all. They might just not have learned to cycle, or swim. 🙄 Or they may not be able to for many, many other reasons that aren't related to their fitness levels

PurpleWisteria1 · 29/06/2023 18:33

Varies hugely.
My 9 year old could do all that 3 times over.
His friend couldn’t even walk the 2 miles without a lot of effort and stopping.

ContractQuestion · 29/06/2023 18:34

Well mine wouldn't. They could "go for a bike ride" or "go for a swim" but wouldn't do both

Obviously failures by mn standards!!!!

SweetSakura · 29/06/2023 18:35

Yes, sounds like a nice trip out and my 9 year old DD would probably head straight to the trampoline once she got home Grin

847arc · 29/06/2023 18:36

Yes, but there would be a huge amount of moaning on the bike ride back.

Oldnproud · 29/06/2023 18:36

AFewScrewsLucy · 29/06/2023 18:28

Normal level of 9yo I'd say. he plays football, swims, rides his bike around. That kind of thing. Not in elite teams or doing mini triathlons or anything...just normal kids stuff.

Should be OK then, but still dependent on his character, and whether he usually does these things purely for fun or not. I would be asking his parents what he might be like in that situation for them, though I suspect that even if he would moan about doing it with them, he might be happier to do it with you anyway.q

Kiwiandstrawberries · 29/06/2023 18:38

Depends on stamina and personality!

Fatkittythinkitty · 29/06/2023 18:38

My prediction - he'll do this without complaint for his Aunty. His parents will think, great why don't we try this lovely wholesome activity with him? They'll set out on bikes and within minutes he'll be moaning and complaining and will repeat this on the way back. They'll wonder how the hell you did it.

Anyway, it's a reasonable thing to ask if you can do it with him.

Yes, that is what I was imagining too 😁

2bazookas · 29/06/2023 18:50

If they are regular cyclists and swimmers, yes I'd expect an active 9 yr old to be physically capable of that. But supervised, not on their own.

whataboutme77 · 29/06/2023 19:03

Mmm so inviting strangers on the internet to guess whether your nephew will enjoy this activity or not will work better than asking him or his mum? 😆

Just say you'd love him to come and he could ride with you or meet you there.

The problem with this sort of post is that it invites this sort of reply:

If kids would struggle to do that.. then it's not surprising there are so many fat kids about is all I can say. 4 miles is really not that far on a bike.

Which is often what the op is angling for in some way. If it doesn't apply to you then I apologise.

Oblomov23 · 29/06/2023 19:03

Yes

Favouritefruits · 29/06/2023 19:06

Yes, but my nine year old does triathlons, so many kids these days are so used to the car and staring a a screen they are very unfit.

Wasn't whether he'd enjoy it...it's whether it was asking too much of him. I'm certain he'd like the activities, just wanted opinions on if it was too strenuous for that age or not...

DD, a chronic asthmatic, would've happily done this at 9.

DS, also a chronic asthmatic but also has dyspraxia, wouldn't have been able to do the cycling bit. He could swim for miles but couldn't co-ordinate himself on a bike. There was nothing "unfit" about him, he was a competitive club swimmer at 9 as was DD.

That is the context I needed op. It doesn't matter if my 9 year old could do it or anyone else's - just ask the child's dm.

Not a bunch of randoms on the internet.

MushroomQueen · 29/06/2023 19:12

Yes, complaining on way home but yes, and he's not at all sporty

MuggleMe · 29/06/2023 19:25

Mine couldn't because she struggles on her bike, but most of the remotely sporty 9yos I can think of would be delighted.

Sarfar45 · 29/06/2023 19:45

Yes

Sarfar45 · 29/06/2023 19:46

Yes, maybe with a snack and drink after swim though.

MrsMarzetti · 29/06/2023 19:56

NewDogOwner · 29/06/2023 18:05

Children are often exhausted after swimming. A long ride back could be too much.

Surely a healthy 8 year old should not be "exhausted" after leas than 90 minutes of exercise, a bit tired maybe but if they are exhausted something is wrong i.e they are driven everywhere and sit on a sofa the rest of the time.
