DS said his throat and ears itch after eating chocolate?

I gave my 8 yo ASD son a custard cream yesterday and he said "it's making my ears and throat itchy, you know, like chocolate does"
Turns out that chocolate has ALWAYS done that to him and he thought it did it to everyone!

Any ideas why? I thought of oral allergy syndrome but I can't see chocolate in the list of common foods to cause it.

Would you take him to see a doctor?

Soya, nuts, contaminating the chocolate?

Does it hhappen with anything else?

He's never mentioned it before. He's not too good at saying how he feels to be honest.
Now I know this is what is happening, I'm going to ask him every time he eats something.

He had an egg allergy till he was about 5 but he seemed to grow out of it

If I eat something very sweet, buttercream icing or similar, it makes my throat sort of tingly and itchy. No idea why, I just accepted it as one of those weird things my body does.

Soya. Bet cha. I’m like this with all choc except Cadbury as they use a different lecithin. Same with custard creams. It’s shit.
And Japanese/Chinese food - ugh soy sauce! Knocks me flat. And I feel exhausted with it too, for a few hours after.

PuffinsRocks · 29/06/2023 14:49

It could be a sensory issue. I have this with tinned spaghetti, it makes my throat feel tingly and weird but it's just the sensation of that texture as I swallow it.

ThanksItHasPockets · 29/06/2023 14:50

Very likely that they both contain soy lecithin. I would consider soy allergy.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/06/2023 14:58

Allergy. And yes see a Dr. These things can worse.

Icecreamalaska · 29/06/2023 15:06

See your gp and get him tested for allergies (properly, medically). A lot of places that offer allergy testing aren't reputable so make sure it's proper qualified medics doing IgE testing. Anything affecting the airways (eg itchy throat) is serious. He may need to avoid certain foods, carry an epipen etc...or he may not, but you need to find out.

Then stop eating chocolate or whatever makes him itch

SirKurtBored · 29/06/2023 15:39

I get similar with nuts, especially peanuts - love them, but I can actually feel the tube to my ears itching after I eat them.

Icecreamalaska · 29/06/2023 16:29

Maybe you should get it checked out @SirKurtBored?

You’ve got a peanut allergy!

My DDs, both in their forties now, were allergic to chocolate and nuts as children, but have grown out of the chocolate allergy over the years. Still highly allergic to nuts though.

Mate, you’re allergic to nuts.

Watercoloursky · 29/06/2023 20:39

Following with interest... I hope you get some answers! I have the same when I eat really rich chocolate things - ganache, a rich chocolate cake, etc, it makes my mouth itch. But in my case I don't think it's soy because I eat a LOT of Chinese and Japanese food and they don't have the same effect.

Vitriolinsanity · 29/06/2023 21:41

Chocolate makes my throat sore sometimes.

I have a tree nut allergy, that makes my ears and throat itch. Then I projectile vomit.

I'm the gift that gives.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 29/06/2023 21:47

Oh I get this sometimes! It's not every time I eat chocolate and it's not immediate but I definitely notice it when I've had more than a little bit. Itch like mad!

megletthesecond · 29/06/2023 21:55

Definitely GP.

longtompot · 29/06/2023 22:03

My dd has a chocolate allergy, even cocoa butter affects her. She gets the really itchy and sore throat so no longer eats chocolate. We did find a good carob alternative but they are no longer made, and any I do find contain cocoa butter. My ds also has the itchy throat but he doesn't really eat chocolate so it doesn't bother him too much.

Is itchy throat and ears the oly symptom she gets?
Did you go to the doctor or just cut it out?

I get exactly this with raw fruit. For about 15 mins after eating it. It’s itchy at the back of my throat towards my ears. Quite annoying!

Purplesquare8 · 30/06/2023 08:19

I get this all the time, I never realized it could be a food allergy!! I assumed some sort of hay fever/ eczema.

She also gets itchy skin if she uses lotions with cocoa butter in. We haven't been to the gp, just cut it out.
My other dd is allergic to dairy so she has been to the gp and got tested, though they didn't do the dairy allergy test due to her reactions to it (swollen mouth and throat) as they said she would have just ended up in an ambulance, but she found out she is allergic to pet dander and some tree pollen, and there was something else but not as severe so can't remember.
