Temporary internet solution at home

CoCoaButter85 · 29/06/2023 13:14

It seems that we are going to lose internet for the next few weeks (long story, so don't want to get into details). However, with both of us working from home it's a big issue.

Can anyone recommend what are the best temporary internet solutions out there please? I know dongle is one but is there anything else that all devices could be connected to instead?

It's quite an urgent matter for us. Much appreciate your response.

Use your phone as a hot spot. I have to do this in work as I don't get wifi in my office (!!) and often do it on the train commuting. It's not ideal forever, as you will use extra data and may need to purchase more as a one-off. But it's perfectly doable for a few days.

If you’re in a contact but you have a spare phone, buy a SIM card that offers a one month rolling contract with unlimited data and tether to it. Smarty do one and I think was about £20 a month.

Three do a home broadband but I’ve not used it so don’t know how good it is.

Smarty £20/ month unlimited as above.

It 'runs' the firestick TV, my phone and daughters phone from the hotspot.

You can buy the SIM cards in a lot of local shops.

I don't pay for broadband any more.

eurochick · 29/06/2023 13:40

Just tether to your phone.

We use a mobile broadband 5G router as well as a standard BT connection. Very fast and good value.

My work laptop doesn't connect to my mobile phone so running it off the mobile is not an option. I need some sort of home broadband solution ideally

@tattychicken - I have just checked 5g home broadband from Three and we get good connection at home. Can we connect our TV into this as well?

Search for broadband dongle on Argos. So much better than using all the phone data.

tattychicken · 04/07/2023 18:46

@CoCoaButter85 yes you can. We run our TV and Xbox/ screens etc off the 5G.

@CoCoaButter85

Sorry for slow reply!

One of these would do the job

D-Link DWR-932 4G/3G LTE Unlocked Wireless N300 Mobile Broadband Router - Wi-Fi Portable Hotspot, Black https://amzn.eu/d/7TtkGB9

Drop in a SIM card with sufficient data and use it as a wifi hotspot

I have one for occasional use in fields etc …. Provided I can get a signal, and friends have them in their shops. One has it as a spare in case their fixed connection goes down, the other just uses a hotspot

We have a 3 mobile broadband router for our extension. It's where I work from home so in the day my laptop and phone are connected. It also has the firestick connected for streaming TV and is really good.
It is on a 2 year contract but they do 1 year too, I think. We also use it when we travel in UK as kids devices/phones etc all connect automatically and it's being paid for anyway. We take it to hotels, lodges, caravans etc, it's really handy to have!

You can buy portable 5G devices. EE had a couple of different ones. Which can be plugged in and then basically act as a WiFi.
I used one for a long time during Covid as our Internet couldn't support multiple people using it and it was fine
