How bad for you is smoked fish?

I hate fish but in an attempt to get myself eating more, I've been trying a few things and totally randomly and bizarrely found that I like smoked trout (but not smoked salmon).

I've been feeling pleased that I've finally found fish I like but then someone said the whole process of smoking makes smoked fish as bad as processed meats. A quick google sheds no light - some say it's v good for you and the good outweighs the bad, some say it's as bad as processed meats.

Just wondering what others do. Do you consider it a processed meat? I'm thinking I may have to go back to the drawing board!

I think it's fine once or twice a week like most things, it's best not to eat it every day! Have you tried smoked mackerel? I like the peppered one. Can cope with tuna steak as well

I loved smoked fish and eat it regularly. My favourite is smoked haddock. You can buy the bright yellow version which is dyed in most supermarkets. However if you go to a fishmonger you can usually get the un dyed version. The dye is usually food based not artificial colourant.

With smoked trout and salmon they don’t usually use any dye but I believe the process uses nitrates which is the same process as turning pork into bacon. It is possible to get nitrate free bacon. I suspect, for a price, you can get nitrate or preservative free smoked fish. Think smoked over wood chips etc.

I would say that eating some smoked fish is better than eating no fish. If you ever get the chance to try an Arbroath Smokie I urge you to try it.
