Worried about this symptom in DH (possible TMI)

regular poster but NC for obvious reasons

DH has experienced blood when going to the toilet twice in the last 12 months. immediately after it happened the first time he made a GP appointment, GP saw him same day did a consultation/examination and deduced it was piles, which GP said is not uncommon in anyone but especially not uncommon for those who play sports or are active at the gym which DH is

DH told me it happened again last week and visually it looked quite alarming, it happened a couple of times during the course of that day and looked quite bad and he had upset tummy symptoms along with it, digestive cramps on that one day. it hasn’t happened since, and like I say it’s only happened twice in the last six months both occasions over 4 months apart

I am worried it’s something really sinister but DH has said if it was, it would be happening more regularly or at least a few times in between the two occasions it did happen. Is he right?

Has anyone had this and what was it? For some reason I don’t trust the GP that it was piles as that GP seems quite abrupt and dismissive in my experience and I am fearing that it’s something horrible.

Sorry for the TMI post!

Definitely ask to see a different doctor for a second opinion.

It’s a potentially concerning symptom. I used to work in Endoscopy. Most patients did just have haemorrhoids! But it should warrant an urgent gastro review. It can be a sign of cancer and colonoscopy or scan are the only ways to rule it out. I saw patients who only had bleeding once have polyps for example (that can turn into cancer if they get left) . Other patients who got picked up for IBD. He needs to see his GP and push for a gastro referral. Should be done as a two week wait to rule out cancer.
Hope he’s okay.

It’s bright red which is why GP said no concern. He is also only 20 something and has a very healthy active lifestyle. I really hope it’s nothing bad, it has only happened twice in a year on two very spaced out occasions so you would think if it was bad surely it must have occurred more, or would still be happening this week

Can it be a symptom of IBD? Didn’t know this, he has family members diagnosed with IBD

Honestly OP nobody on here will be able to diagnose what it is. If it’s bright red blood then piles is probably the most likely reason but it needs to be diagnosed following a clinical examination. Did the Dr carry out a physical examination or suggest treatments? If not you should book another appointment to put your and your DH’s mind at rest.

Physical examination and it is bright red, no doubt about that. Doctor was confident it was piles. But that was after the first occasion, wasn’t checked after the second but it hasn’t happened since.

Has only happened on two occasions and hasn’t continued to happen since, or in between those times.

Piles have a tendency to reoccur. In my experience they are something you have to learn to manage. But in view of it being a relatively new symptom that you are still worried about there is certainly no harm in going back to your GP and asking them to check again and consider a referral (as suggested by PP) to rule out anything more serious.

My husband only had a couple of occurrences but he was sent for a colonoscopy under the 2 week wait. Turns out he has ulcerative colitis. I would definitely get him to go back again to be checked.

He needs to do a stool test - his GP sounds shocking

GP is abrupt and seems very rushed usually when I’ve seen that specific doctor but he did conclude that he is young, active and visually thought it was piles so…

Thank you. Did he have any other symptoms? Is UC a chronic condition?

UC is a time of IBD, there’s UC and Crohn’s disease. Both are long term conditions but there are lots of ways to manage them. Usually a flare would show with more blood but not always.
I’d say he needs to a see a different GP, a thorough and considerate GP, especially given there’s a family history of IBD.
