Quitting teaching

I’m fed up of teaching, fed up of SLT, fed up of workload. What other options are there for someone who’s got a background in teaching????

But these jobs always seem to want a couple of years experience in that sector already 🤷🏾‍♀️

Tutoring?

Singleandproud · 28/06/2023 16:36

Civil service (or similar public bodies). I've met lots of ex teachers since quitting in December most start out in admin, communications or training and then as they find their place and become more experienced move into more specialist roles.

Whatajokr · 28/06/2023 16:38

Lots.

Join the Facebook group life after teaching and Penny Rabinger on Twitter posts several life after teaching jobs every Sunday morning at around 9am for an hour.

Singleandproud · 28/06/2023 16:38

Civil service / Public bodies will also wait for you, I ended up giving six months notice as I didn't get confirmation that I'd passed the security checks until July and my school wouldn't release me sooner.

Goblinita · 28/06/2023 17:17

@Singleandproud i did a bit of admin before uni and it was the worst job ever!

I'm going to hand my notice in when we go back in September to finish at Christmas. I'm single and have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do!! Terrified at the prospect...but even more terrified at the thought of trying to fight my way through another year. These past three years have completely broken me. I can't do any more...I'm done. 🤷‍♀️

I'm going to spend the summer holidays contacting everybody I know who might have a lead or way into 'something'. I don't actually care what it is...I'll manage.

Good luck to you OP...we can do this!!

Goblinita · 28/06/2023 18:09

Yep I feel broken too. I wanna do the same as you but worried I won’t find anything or don’t know where to start tbh

Prison warden 😂

Probably depends on your background/degree.

WGACA · 28/06/2023 18:51

Yes definitely join the Facebook group Life After Teaching.

SpuffyForever · 28/06/2023 18:52

I started off just working in an after-school club to get my confidence and mental health back after leaving teaching.

I then got into tutoring and absolutely love it - I've found my niche!

I mostly work with children in foster care, but there is lots of private work out there too, especially if you live in an 11+ area.

jaysusmickeyandjoseph · 28/06/2023 18:53

Check out the website didteach

I found my new job through there - I work in Edtech as a trainer

@Goblinita I started as admin 6 months ago and have already moved to a different position higher up the payscale there is lots of internal movement available you just need to get your foot in the door. The conditions working for the civil service and other related public bodies for example DEFRA and related orgs Natural England, Environment agency and APHA are so good its easy to put up with a bit of boring admin.

The downside of leaving teaching is that if you are a good way up the pay scale then to get anything similar you need line management experience as they'll often be managerial roles.

Goblinita · 28/06/2023 19:57

@SpuffyForever tutoring isn’t secure enough unfortunately

OP posts:
Goblinita · 28/06/2023 20:47

Is it worth going via the recruiter route?

OP posts:
persisted · 28/06/2023 20:53

Work based learning/ apprenticeships. Management of it rather than teaching them.
Different kettle of fish when they're employed.

Plasmodesmata · 28/06/2023 20:54

Tutoring here, has been plenty secure enough (science subject, lots of demand both locally and online).

Goblinita · 28/06/2023 21:00

@Plasmodesmata hoe many hours do you get a week?

It’s just so frustrating. I like the job per se but it’s the politics that make it terrible!
